Alan Titchmarsh, 71, joins Instagram but jokes he doesn’t want to provoke any trolls

Alan Titchmarsh has decided to join Instagram at the age of 71.

The TV presenter spent lockdown tending to his garden and filming his ITV series Grow Your Own At Home, but has now decided to branch out into social media.

After joining, Alan joked he won’t be provoking any trolls as he doesn’t think people can have a ‘venomous reaction to a picture of a daffodil.’

‘During this potting season, I have instead been plotting and have finally decided to join Instagram.’

Alan said he was persuaded to join the micro blogging platform by his daughters, Polly, 42, and Camilla, 40.

During a new interview, Alan confessed he will consult his daughters before posting anything to avoid causing them any embarrassment.

He told The Mirror: ‘I wouldn’t dream of embarrassing my kids. I run things past my kids. When I’m asking: ‘Would you like to do this?’ I’ll say to my daughters: ‘What do you think?’

‘If they say ‘Oh dad, no!’ I don’t do it. My family and friends are more important to me than my standing on social media.’

The presenter will not be joining Twitter and Facebook to avoid trolls and controversy, and vowed to stick to posting pictures of his garden.

‘I’m not doing it to be reassured about my popularity – I’m just happy to share the things I enjoy. People can either look at them or not look at them, and that will do. It’s very benign, it’s very gentle, there’s going to be nothing controversial.’

Appearing on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, the presenter said he could only judge Charles, 72, ‘as he knows him’ rather than any impression given by his family.

‘I wouldn’t comment on the interview at all, except to say the Prince of Wales, the work he has done for this country, the work he has done for the youth of this country with the Prince’s Trust, with the Prince’s Youth Business Trust is self-evident,’ he explained.

‘If you look at what he’s achieved during his life, we need to value that as well. It’s very easy to judge other people on their family, but we don’t know the inside stories in all these families.

‘It’s far better to judge people as we know them and my knowledge of the Prince of Wales is an incredibly hard working man, hardest working man I know, who has achieved so much in his life and I value his input into our society enormously.’

Alan, who received an MBE in 2000, spoke out in an interview,  saying: ‘I feel for him a lot.’

‘I think it’s sad he’s had to be put through what he’s been put through, but he’s got enough people, I hope, who value what he does and who can see what he does and can field for him.’
