Oscar-winner Thomas Vinterberg ‘full of hope and curiosity’ about Leonardo DiCaprio remake of his film Another Round … amid backlash toward cinematic adaptation

  • Vinterberg optimistic about how DiCaprio would handle the material
  • He said the film is ‘in the hands of the finest actor you can get’
  • Director collected Oscar on Sunday for Best International Feature Film
  • Vinterberg said he wasn’t sure if Mads Mikkelsen would reprise his role as Martin
  • Twitter users were sour on a remake, pointing at a lack of original content

Thomas Vinterberg says he’s ‘full of hope and curiosity about’ an English language adaptation of his Oscar-winning film Another Round that Leonardo DiCaprio and his company Appian Way are working on.

‘I’ve seen various interpretations of my work before,’ the Danish film director, 51, told Indiewire Monday. ‘It’s an interesting artistic thing to see something grow into different versions.’

Vinterberg said he was optimistic about how the Oscar-winning actor would handle the material, complimenting DiCaprio, 46, about how he’s curated his career, after the A-lister’s company acquired the rights to the remake.

The latest: Thomas Vinterberg, 51, says he’s ‘full of hope and curiosity about’ an English language adaptation of his film Another Round that Leonardo DiCaprio, 46, and his company Appian Way are working on

‘Now it’s in the hands of the finest actor you can get and besides being a brilliant actor, he’s made very intelligent choices throughout his career,’ said Vinterberg, who delivered an emotional speech in memory of his late daughter Ida in accepting an Academy Award for Best International Feature Film Sunday. ‘I feel there’s a lot of integrity in the choices he’s made.’

Vinterberg told the outlet he was slated to meet with Appian Way this week about the project, but would not be writing or directing.

He said, ‘This is all new to me. So I’ll discuss this with them, and we’ll see.’

Vinterberg said he wasn’t sure if Mads Mikkelsen would reprise his role as Martin in the remake.

‘I’ll leave those kind of decisions to Appian Way and the dialogue I’ll have with them,’ Vinterberg said. ‘I don’t know if Mads would do such a thing.

‘My first thought would be to make a different interpretation. Asking the same actor to do a different interpretation could be a little bit confusing. But I won’t be the main creative force in this. That would have to be up to the people who end up doing it.’

On Twitter, a number of fans expressed strong reactions about an American remake of the lauded Danish motion picture, saying it was redundant, and reflective of Hollywood’s dearth of original content.

‘I’m American and this seriously pi***s me off,’ one user wrote. ‘Hollywood doesn’t have any originality anymore so they like to take from other countries and cultures and try to make it their own. They’re going to mess it up too since American culture regarding drinking is whack.’

Another user said: ‘Man, Hollywood thinks removing the subtitles is enough of a concept that merits an adaptation. I wanna pitch Amelie, but sans subtitles. GIVE ME MY MILLIONS OF DOLLARS PLEASE.

One person pointed out the contradiction in the remake, saying, ‘Another round is literally a movie that celebrates the *Danish* culture … Why would it need an *American* remake???’
