ARIA charts list of best selling artists for 2020 sees Harry Styles scoop the pool

Harry Styles and The Weeknd are 2020’s best selling artists on the ARIA charts – while only two Australian singers made the list

Australia’s ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) charts weren’t very Australian in 2020, with just two local acts in the top albums and singles.

The artists sweeping up included British pop star Harry Styles, who had the highest selling album of last year with Fine Line coming in at number one.

American singer Taylor Swift’s new album Folklore, which was made in lockdown in secret and released as a surprise, reached number two.

Fellow U.S. resident Billie Eilish came in at number three, with her album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

Coming at number four was one of the only Australian-based acts in the running – with AC/DC ‘s album PWRϟUP sliding into the top five.

American singer-songwriter Luke Combs came in at number five, with What You See Is What You Get.

Australians didn’t fare much better in the singles wins, with the highest selling single going to American pop star The Weeknd with Blinding Lights.

At number two was American rapper SAINt JHN with Roses, while at number three was English singer and songwriter Dua Lipa with Don’t Start Now.

Finally a local talent got some representation, with Australian pop star Tones And I at number four with her mega-hit single Dance Monkey.

Rounding out the top five was American rapper DaBaby featuring fellow U.S star Roddy Rich, with their single Rockstar.

It comes after November’s ARIA Awards suffered some of the worst ratings ever in the history of the show.

Hosted by singer Delta Goodrem, 2020’s ceremony drew in just 287,000 viewers across the five major cities, reported TV Tonight, leading to fears the awards may never be televised again.
