A Queensland opposition MP has been criticised for claiming the Duchess of Sussex is trying to damage the British monarchy because she ‘married the wrong prince’.

The Queen says the royal family is saddened by the challenging experiences of her grandson Prince Harry and his wife Meghan and promised to privately address claims about a racist remark about their son.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey aired on US television on Sunday, Meghan accused the royal family of raising concerns about how dark their son Archie’s skin might be and ignoring her pleas for help while she considered self-harm.

Liberal National Party MP and staunch monarchist Jarrod Bleijie claims Meghan’s vendetta against the institution of the monarchy only started after she found out she wasn’t in line to be a queen.

‘The problem started when American actress Meghan Markle was told William would be King not Harry. It was at this time that she realised that she married the wrong prince,’ he wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

‘So if she can’t be the future queen, she’ll attempt to take down the institution. The Crown will prevail!’

Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace said Mr Bleijie’s comments are disappointing coming so close to International Women’s Day earlier this week, and send the wrong message for young people and especially girls.

‘It is disappointing that during a week where we are celebrating the success of women around the world, that we have a member in this House who is essentially saying that Meghan Markle is a gold digger,’ Ms Grace told parliament on Wednesday.

‘Meghan Markle is not who she married. She is a strong, successful woman in her own right.

‘The young people of today deserve better.’

Mr Bleijie – who was momentarily out of the House when Ms Grace spoke – gasped ‘What?’ as he returned to his seat.
