Bernie’s ‘Vermont dadcore’ fashion steals the show at the inauguration

‘We’re not so concerned about fashion, we want to keep warm!’ Bernie defends his ‘Vermont dadcore’ fashion after his mittens made from recycled sweaters steal the show at inauguration

  • The 79-year-old’s wool mitten and signature brown coat stood in stark contrast to the long flowing overcoats and leather gloves at the Capitol
  • Even Rashida Tlaib (MI-D) shared that she wanted a pair of the mittens
  • There were many people who admired the other looks but couldn’t help but focus on Bernie Sanders’ more practical ‘Vermont dadcore’ style
  • Several people loved seeing Bernie sitting with his legs crossed, looking cozy and staying an adequate distance away from others
  • Mittens were created by Jen Ellis, a teacher based in Essex Junction, Vermont, who gave Sanders the warm clothing item as a gift almost three years ago

Senator Bernie Sanders (VT-D) sees nothing unusual about his super casual outerwear that he sported at the inauguration, declaring that people in Vermont ‘know something about the cold.’

Speaking to Gayle King following the ceremonies, and after people flocked to Twitter to share their admiration for his mittens and signature brown coat, the 79-year-old said that people in Vermont weren’t as concerned about their fashion.

‘In Vermont, we know something about the cold,’ Sanders said, ‘and we’re not so concerned about good fashion.

‘We want to keep warm. And that’s what I did today.’

King quickly replied with a laugh:’Mission accomplished.’

While the women at the inauguration were lauded for their impeccable style choices, Senator Bernie Sander’s (VT-D) mittens became the talk of the town as the best sensible fashion at the Capitol.

Sanders’ wool mitten and signature brown coat stood in stark contrast to the long flowing overcoats and leather gloves sported by many in Washington on Wednesday, but social media quickly deemed his look just as trendsetting.

Even Rashida Tlaib (MI-D) shared that she wanted a pair of the mittens.

Several people loved seeing Bernie sitting with his legs crossed, looking cozy and staying an adequate distance away from other people at the festivities. Memes soon came from the image of the laid back senator.

One showed Sanders sitting with soccer moms as they waited on their kids.

‘Bernie Sanders: ‘How long are these games? My feet are chilly,” the user said in the post.

There were many people who admired the other looks but couldn’t help but focus on Sanders’ more practical style.

‘In all the inauguration fashion news, let us not overlook Senator Bernie Sanders’ mittens,’ declared one user.

Another added: ‘I, for one, took mental note of Bernie Sanders and his grey parka and woolly mitts. Fashion icon for me and millions like me.’

Grace Segers said: ‘I see everyone mocking Bernie’s ‘grandpa at the post office’ vibe today but those mittens are clutch.’

The mittens were created by Jen Ellis, a teacher based in Essex Junction, Vermont, who gave Sanders the warm clothing item as a gift almost three years ago.

She makes the mittens using repurposed wool sweaters and lines them with fleece made from recycled plastic bottles.

Ellis now calls them Bernie Mittens, occasionally sharing on Twitter that she has new ones for sale.
