Prior to appearing on Black Is King, Brown Skin Girl was a part of her 2019 LP The Lion King: The Gift, which was a companion soundtrack to Disney’s live-action adaptation of the 1995 animated classic.

The performer, who also shares 3-year-old twins, daughter Rumi and son Sir with her husband Jay Z, sought to celebrate Black culture.

Earlier this month, the video’s director opened up about how she aimed to make the project an affirmation.

'Pose like a trophy when they Naomi walking/She need an Oscar for that pretty dark skin,' Beyoncé sings. 'Pretty like Lupita when the cameras close in/Drip broke the levy when my Kelly's Rowland'

‘I just think Brown skin, Black skin, dark skin, is so beautiful. I just see the divinity in it. It’s gorgeous,’ she told the Essence earlier this month. ‘This was meant to be an affirmation of that. That’s the intent of it, to be an affirmation.’

Nkiru also pointed out to Vogue, as the ‘only woman director outside of Beyoncé on the project,’ she wanted to bring a ‘feminine energy’ to Brown Skin Girl.

To portray the intimacy, sisterhood, and celebrations’ of life, she thought recreating a debutante ball would be the perfect backdrop.

Additionally, according to Vox, with her stunning bright yellow dress, she is comparing herself to the Yoruba deity Osun.

‘In the Yoruba cosmology of southwestern Nigeria and Benin, Oshun is the goddess, or orisha, of love, sensuality, and femininity,’ the author points out. ‘She is a river goddess, and one of her attributes is to bring forth sweet and fertile waters. Oshun is a mother: Her waters were central to the creation of humanity, and she looks after small children before they can speak.’
