  • She put out a plea on social media for people to keep a look out for it in Devon
  • To her surprise, two months, later the ring was found on her anniversary
  • Metal detectorist Mark saw her appeal and was able to find the treasured item

A couple were left amazed after a wedding ring they lost at sea turned up two months later on their anniversary.

Jenny Urquhart, 45, from Bristol, thought she’d never see her white gold band again after it fell off while she was surfing in Devon in May.

She decided to put a drawing of the ring on social media with an appeal for anyone who may find it to get in touch.

Amazingly she was contacted 11 weeks later by a metal detectorist named Mark on her 17th wedding anniversary, after he saw her post.

Jenny thought she would never see her beloved wedding ring again and said she was amazed when he told her the good news.

She said: ‘I just thought, “That’s it, it’s going to be swallowed by a big fish”.

‘Metal detectors do find rings all the time but the chances of finding this were unbelievable.

‘I showed my husband Mark’s message and he said it was our wedding anniversary – I’d completely forgotten.’

Jenny was out surfing at about waist height at Saunton Sands when she dropped the ring while trying to put it in her wetsuit pocket.

In a desperate bid to get it back, she also drew a picture of the ring to show people in the town

‘I realised I still had both my engagement and wedding rings on,’ she said.

‘I tried to take them off and managed to get my engagement ring in the pocket but my wedding ring missed and went to the bottom of the sea.

‘I yelled to mates and tried to mark the spot. We looked for about five minutes but eventually I just said, “Okay it’s gone”.’

She then went into every café and shop along the beach, drawing out the ring and asking anyone who found it to get in touch.

But after no joy she then posted a drawing of the ring on social media, writing: ‘HELP!! I lost my wedding ring in the sea at Saunton Sands on Friday, May 7.

‘It’s white gold (silvery colour) & I watched it float to the bottom in 2ft water. PLEASE, PLEASE.’

Jenny then received a message from Mark, informing her he’d had a search along the beach.

‘I sent him a sketch of the beach – Saunton is massive,’ she said. Then I had a little message Saturday morning saying, “guess what!”

‘Because I designed the ring, it’s a really specific shape, and I knew it was definitely mine.

‘Stuart looked as amazed as me. It’s just a thing, it’s not a terribly valuable ring – but losing it was gutting really. I’m just so grateful.’
