British tourist drowns on his 64th birthday at a Turkish holiday resort while his family were busy organising a surprise party for him

  • He was rushed out of the water by hotel staff members and taken to hospital
  • Doctors were unable to revive him after he was rushed there by ambulance 

A British tourist drowned on his birthday at a Turkish holiday resort while his family were busy organising a surprise party for him.

John Alan Rae, 64, was swimming in the sea in Bodrum in the Turkish province of Mugla at around midday on October 19 when he was spotted in trouble in the water.

According to the DHA news agency, hotel staff members were notified and they rushed to drag him out of the sea.

Suspecting that his heart had stopped, medics tried to resuscitate him at the scene while waiting for the emergency services to arrive.

Mr Rae was taken to a nearby private hospital by ambulance, however, doctors were unable to revive him.

Following his death, Rea’s body was sent to the Muğla Forensic Medicine Institute Morgu for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Meanwhile, the local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Mr Rae passed away on his birthday and his family had been preparing a surprise party for him later that evening.

He was on holiday with his wife and other family and was swimming with his son at the time of the incident, according to local reports.

The tourist owns a holiday home in Küçükbük where he stays for three to four months a year, reported Sabah
