At the helm of the ‘ghost ship’: Captain of P&O luxury cruise liner anchored off Devon coast tells of months as one of a handful aboard after 3,100 passengers and 1,280 crew abandoned ship

  • Marcin Banach is part of skeleton crew left aboard the P&O cruiseliner in Devon
  • Banach has been posting pictures of himself enjoying the ship’s facilities alone
  • P&O Cruises announced it will be extending its suspension of cruises until November 12 2020

The captain of a P&O ‘ghost ship’ has been sharing his experiences on-board the usually packed vessel as it sits with only a handful of staff aboard off the coast of Torbay.

Marcin Banach, who would usually be accompanied with over three thousand passengers and one thousand staff, is currently moored off Babbacombe Bay Torquay, on the Azura cruiseliner with just skeleton staff present.

He will be there until November which is when P&O have decided to restart their cruises.

Nevertheless, Banach is making the most of his time aboard and seems to be enjoying himself.

Marcin Banach, captain of P&O Azura, has been regularly posting about his time alone on the ship, which is currently moored off Devon

In a series of pictures and comments uploaded to Twitter, Banach can be seen alone in a gym, a rare sight.

Another shows him wrapped in dustsheets, Devon Live reported.

Banach has been keeping fit by walking and working out on the ship’s decks.

Yesterday he shared a picture of sister ship Ventura, which is also moored off Torbay.

‘We finally got to see her this morning @pandocruises #Ventura half way out of this mistic and low lying fog in the #BabbacombeBay in #Devon,’ he wrote.

‘Our fog bell on the bow of #Azura is still going as it is rather patchy this morning. Have a good day People.’

In normal times, the Azura’s passengers could take advantage of the ship’s 12 bars, an open air cinema, and five entertainment venues.

The 14-deck ship usually sails to destinations in the Mediterranean.

When the ship first arrived in Devon the Captain admired his view, saying ‘this coast line looks incredible’ on Twitter.

P&O Cruises announced it will be extending its suspension of cruises until November 12 2020.
