In the video, the camera pans over a forest of fall foliage, with quick shots of police cars surrounding a crime scene and a body being carried out of a river.

The images are cut with glimpses of a moth’s wings flapping, before moving into a dark tunnel, with more winged insects circling a light.

It then references Silence of the Lambs, showing Clarice’s holstered gun, Buffalo Bill building a skin suit and a newspaper clipping with the headline: ‘Bill Skins Fifth.’

Australian actress Rebecca Breeds leads the show as Clarice Starling, who returns to the field to hunt down serial killers and sexual predators in 1993, a year after the events of Silence of the Lambs.

She took to Instagram in February after the casting announcement, writing: ‘Thank you thank you thank you for the role of a life time. Think I’ve earned myself a nice glass of Chianti…’

Executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, it also stars Kal Penn, Lucca de Oliveira, Devyn Tyler and Michael Cudlitz.

It promises ‘a deep dive into the untold personal story’ of Clarice, who was originated onscreen by Jodie Foster, earning her an Oscar for the 1991 film.

Julianne Moore took over the role 10 years later in the 2001 sequel Hannibal, in which Anthony Hopkins revived his portrayal of the titular cannibalistic murderer.

The show starring Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen ran for three seasons from 2013 to 2015, and fans have been pushing for a fourth.

Mikkelsen told IndieWire last month of his hopes for a potential season four: ‘I don’t think it’s a secret that if it does happen, we would love to go into Silence of the Lambs.

‘That’s always been an issue because they didn’t have the rights for that book. But that’s obviously the most famous part and we’d love to go in there. We’d obviously switch it around a little and do all kinds of crazy stuff with it. That story is so interesting and the characters in it are as interesting.

‘We’d switch around the genders and maybe even put two characters into one. We would love to find someone to play Buffalo Bill. That’s going to be tough. We found a Hannibal, so it’s possible.’

But as series developer Bryan Fuller confirmed on Twitter in January, MGM passed on giving the Silence of the Lambs rights to their show, opting to work with CBS on Clarice’s own spin-off.
