‘Let’s begin the healing and stand together in unity’: Chris Hemsworth calls for Australia Day to be moved to a different date

Chris Hemsworth has called for the date of Australia Day to be changed.

The 37-year-old actor shared a photo to Instagram of himself alongside dancers of the Gadigal and Bidiagal Nation.

‘A beautiful start to our shoot today with a Welcome to Country ceremony from the Gamay dancers of the Gadigal and Bidiagal Nation and performance and karakia by Maori dancers from Te Aranganui,’ he wrote.

‘Indigenous Australians may be just as proud of this country, but many see January 26th as a date signifying the beginning of dispossession, disease epidemics, frontier violence, destruction of culture, exploitation, abuse, separation of families and subjection to policies of extreme social control.’

Chris continued:’Let’s begin the healing and stand together in unity and support with our First Nations people with solidarity and compassion.’

‘Let’s find a date where all Australians can celebrate this beautiful country together. #changethedate @taikawaititi #thorloveandthunder @jasinboland.’

Chris has previously called for the date to be changed out of respect for indigenous Australians.

The Hollywood star isn’t the only person speaking out against the Australia Day celebrations.

Thousands of people joined ‘Invasion Day’ protests in cities across Australia on Tuesday.

Protesters swarmed into The Domain near the Sydney CBD despite coronavirus restrictions preventing the huge marches of last year and ones before.

A long-running campaign to abolish Australia Day or change the date has a growing number of Aussies feeling uneasy about our national day of celebration.

Indigenous activists, and many other Australians, now regard the day British settlers who first landed in Port Jackson on the First Fleet in 1788 as an event to be mourned, not celebrated.
