Conor couldn’t resist holding two gold balloons which said: ‘#1’ and ‘proud of you’.

McGregor made the £127 million over the past 12 months, including £112 million outside the Octagon thanks mainly to him selling the remaining stake in his Proper 12 whiskey company.

He made just £15 million from inside the Octagon, having lost his rematch to Dustin Poirier in January this year in Abu Dhabi.

Taking to Twitter, Conor wrote: ‘Baby we did it!! Uimhir a Haon. Thank you Forbes for recognising my role as an entrepreneur! It was a dream to lead this list with so many successful athletes! Onwards and upwards we go.’

McGregor, as well as selling his whiskey company, also came up trumps thanks to his endorsements, adding DraftKings, video game Dystopia: Contest of Heroes, and the lifestyle brand Roots of Fight to his growing portfolio.

It represents only the third time ever that an athlete has raked in more than £49.5 million from outside the sport while competing, following in the footsteps of Tiger Woods and Roger Federer.

McGregor is the first UFC star to have topped the yearly Forbes list, and the only Irishman to do so.
