Cruella is BORN! Emma Stone stars in first trailer for origin story

Emma Stone’s jaw-dropping transformation into Cruella De Vil has been teased in the first trailer for the origin story of the supervillain.

On Wednesday, Disney released the clip showing the star, 32, acting out the early days of the fur-loving, maniacal, 101 Dalmatians character – complete with astonishing ensembles and glimpses of her wild past.

And while the teaser was certainly visually appealing, viewers appeared to take issue with the likenesses between the wicked depiction of Cruella and the 2019 origin story of Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role.

Many fans insisted the movie should focus on Cruella’s bloodthirsty attitude to fashion as opposed to the makings of her mania, while others lauded the stunning scenes set in the backdrop of 1970s London.

Cruella, which is due for release in May, is directed by the man behind Oscar-nominated film I, Tonya — Craig Gillespie and is based on 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians, the film is set in the English capital in the 1970s.

Disney’s Cruella tells the story of a wealthy fashion designer who develops a penchant for Dalmatian skin and aims to turn 99 Dalmatian puppies into a fur coat.

Cruella will unveil how life began for Estella “Cruella” de Vil, who was hired by Emma Thompson’s character Baroness, the head of a prestigious fashion house.

A voiceover from Emma opens the clip, as she is seen stepping into Liberty London and saying: ‘From the very beginning I realised I saw the world differently to everyone else. That didn’t sit well with some people’.

Hot on her heels comes Baroness, who emerges from a car in an epic ensemble.

Cruella goes on: ‘But I wasn’t for everyone. I guess they were always scared that I’d be a psycho’, before she is heard to utter a biting cackle, and continuing: ‘A new day brings new opportunities and I was ready to make a statement.’

The statement in question sees her strut into a bustling party in a white cape which she sets alight to reveal a red dress and locks eyes with Baroness.

Last year, Emma revealed her storyline comes in to play during Cruella’s younger years – before Glenn Close’s portrayal in the 1996 version of 101 Dalmatians.

‘It’s pretty trippy. It’s wild,’ she said of her role in the movie before adding she walks around set thinking ‘this is bananas.’

When asked about iconic actress Glenn, 72, she added to to Entertainment Tonight: ‘I think she’s obviously the GOAT (greatest of all time), but I also have just loved the cartoon for a really long time.’
