David Beckham pays tribute to Dame Tessa Jowell three years on from the politician’s death

David Beckham showed his support for the Tessa Jowell Foundation in a new Instagram post on Friday.

The football legend, 46, took to his Story to share with fans a link to the charity as he marked three years since the politician’s death.

Former Labour cabinet minister Dame Tessa died aged 70 on May 13 2018 after being diagnosed with brain cancer the year before.

In his post David beamed as he wore a white hoodie from the foundation’s merchandise store as he explained how the organisation works to provide better care for cancer patients. 

The jumper was emblazoned with the phrase ‘Human Sized Picture’, in reference to one of Dame Tessa’s famous quotes: ‘We can all be part of the human sized picture.’ 

He penned in the caption: ‘This week we remember Dame Tessa Jowell, so dearly missed by all who knew her.

‘She continues to inspire people through the foundation created by her family, who work towards better treatment and care for cancer patients.’

He then added a swipe up link for his followers to click on and donate to the cause. 

Former Culture Secretary Dame Tessa brought her fellow peers to tears and received the first ever standing ovation in the House of Lords as she told of her diagnosis and fight to improve care in January 2018. 

A popular figure in Parliament, she played a major role in securing the 2012 Olympics for London when she served as culture secretary. 

Speaking about securing the Olympics for London, she said: ‘When London won, Beckham put his arms around me and I thought we haven’t just won the Olympics, I’ve died and gone to heaven!’ 

Dame Tessa was diagnosed with a gliobastoma multiforme brain tumour in May 2017.

She suffered a haemorrhage the week before her death and then slipped into a coma.

The family spokesman said at the time: ‘It is with great sadness, and an enormous sense of loss, that we announce the death of Tessa Jowell.

‘She died peacefully at the family home near Shipston-on-Stour in Warwickshire last night, shortly after 10pm.

‘Her husband David and their children Jessie and Matthew were by her side, with Jessie’s husband Finn, Matthew’s wife Ella, and David’s children from his first marriage.’

According to the website, the foundation’s ‘mission’ is to ‘ensure that every person diagnosed with brain cancer in the UK can choose to access consistently excellent, specialist brain cancer services by the end of 2022.’
