Davina McCall is berated by Phillip Schofield after she utters a BANNED word on This Morning

She stepped in to host at the last minute after Holly Willoughby took an unexpected ‘day off.’

And it seemed Davina McCall still had to pick up some of the This Morning lingo as she was berated by Phillip Schofield for uttering a banned word on Thursday.

During a fashion segment the presenter, 53, shared her appreciation for a pair of low-price boots by gushing they were ‘really cheap,’ only for Phillip, 58, to frantically correct her by insisting they use the words ‘budget’ or ‘affordable.’

Oops! Davina McCall was berated by Phillip Schofield as they hosted Thursday’s This Morning after she uttered a banned word during a fashion segment

As fashion expert Gok Wan brandished a pair of £26 boots from ASDA, Davina said to Phillip: ‘I love the boots, I like all the really cheap shoes – it’s so good!’

Clearly shocked she’d uttered such a controversial word, Phillip said to Davina: ‘Budget, budget! Never ”cheap”.’

As Gok agreed that they prefer to use the word ‘affordable,’ an apologetic Davina said: ‘We’re not allowed to say cheap? Sorry, I don’t know the words – I’m just happy they’re under £30!’

‘Holly’s having a day off, she’s back on on Monday’: Davina stepped in to host This Morning on Thursday, as Phillip revealed Holly had taken another day off

Davina stepped in to host This Morning on Thursday, as Phillip revealed Holly had taken a second ‘day off,’ and would be back on the show on Monday.

Despite the explanation Holly’s absence sparked concern among fans, as it marked the second day she was a no-show, after being replaced by Alison Hammond on Wednesday.

Fans took to Twitter to express their confusion over the last-minute switch as they said: ‘Where the hell is Holly!!! There’s something going on here #ThisMorning.

‘Definitely something weird going on with Holly #ThisMorning…Holly still on her extended day off I see #ThisMorning.

‘Somethings going on with #ThisMorning weird about Holly having ‘days off’ when she was due to be on air and there’s suddenly a lack of celebrities and call ins with agony aunts, weird.

‘Why are they being cagey about why Holly isn’t there? They are usually very open and transparent !!! #thismorning.

‘Holly’s having a day off? She has Friday, Saturday, Sunday off every week and every school holiday.

‘Why not just say somethings going on she’s got personal reasons?? What other reason would she be off 2 days on the bounce? Hope she’s ok?! #ThisMorning.

‘What’s happened to holly? They said a break but just come back off holiday back on Monday? Thinking face #ThisMorning.’ (sic)

MailOnline has contacted a representative for Holly and an ITV spokesperson for further comment.

Big Brother’s Davina last stood in for Holly in June, when she skipped the programme to take her three children back to school after a three-month break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The ITV veteran had shared an image of herself embarking on the ‘new normal’ school run with Harry, 11, Belle, nine, and Chester, five, after she admitted working mum guilt is her ‘biggest challenge’.

Marking the first time they presented the show together, Dancing On Ice’s Phillip asked: ‘We haven’t done this with me before?’, with co-host Davina confirming: ‘No, I don’t think we have’.

Media personality Holly has been the face of This Morning since replacing Fern Britton in September 2009, and often takes breaks from work to spend time with her family during half-term periods and summer holidays.
