‘My hair was a very different colour!’ Dr Andrew Rochford says he can’t believe he is still recognised for appearing on The Block in 2004 – as he makes yet another TV comeback

He shot to fame in 2004 and has become a famous face on television since. 

But Dr Andrew Rochford has revealed that he still regularly gets recognised for appearing on The Block 16 years ago. 

Speaking to Stellar magazine, the 40-year-old said: ‘It’s always amusing when people remember I was on The Block because it was so long ago now, and my hair was a very different colour.’

Andrew entered with now wife Jamie Nicholson ‘on a whim’ and ended up winning the show, taking home $178,000. 

‘I was a final-year medical student when I applied, and I was just trying to win some money,’ he explains.

‘I wasn’t looking for a media career – there was no social media back then. It was just like, “Maybe we should give this a shot.” I’ve been extremely lucky.’

The media personality has in the past revealed he almost walked away from his showbiz career for good. 

The star told Sydney Confidential: ‘It can be a really sad and miserable and toxic place, the media.

‘The hardest bit (of TV) is seeing people really chewed up and spat out by the space and I just don’t like that,’ Andrew explained.  

Andrew, who gained a medical degree from the University of Sydney, found fame at age 24 on the second series of The Block and was catapulted into an accidental career in television.

In 2010, he became a panelist on Channel Ten’s The Project, before joining  The Living Room. 

Andrew jumped ship to Channel Seven in 2014, appearing as the network’s National Medical Editor before leaving two years later.      

He also appeared on Ten’s new quiz show, Pointless, which replaced Grant Denyer’s recently axed Family Feud. 

The doctor will next appear on Filthy Rich & Homeless which airs 8.30pm, June 9-11, on SBS.
