A driver flattened his girlfriend’s $78,000 Masterati SUV under a concrete freeway bridge after a 100mph police chase. The unidentified 32 year-old, who is believed to have been alone in the car, accelerated after a California Highway Patrol officer tried to pull him over for a speed stop in Oakland on Tuesday morning.

He hit speeds of 100mph, but lost control of the white Levante SUV shortly afterwards, and drove it up a concrete embankment before wedging it under an elevated highway.

The front of the car – which has a top speed of 156mph – was stuck fast under the roadway, with most of its roof crushed by the impact. Its rear fender also flew off as a result of the impact. Afterwards, the Maserati driver was taken to hospital complaining of ‘pain,’ but is expected to recover, and will face a charge of evading.

CHP Officer David Arias told SF Gate: ‘ It was a short-lived pursuit. He didn’t make it far before he exited and as soon as he exited, instead of going straight, he veered left, went off the ramp and then went up the embankment and collided with the underside of the freeway.

‘It’s unbelievable that he didn’t die. It’s crazy that he lived.’ CHP Oakland shared photos of the wrecked car on its Instagram page afterwards, and joked: ‘ Taking the term “flying home” a bit too far… The driver is lucky to be alive. The owner of the Maserati… not so lucky.’
