A shamed fly-tipper was forced to skulk back in the dead of night to collect the sofa he dumped after CCTV footage of him was posted online.

Owners of the Lock and Quay in Bootle, Sefton, Merseyside, publicly shamed the man after CCTV showed him dumping a couch outside their pub.

Security cameras showed the culprit – a man driving a white transit van – pulling the brown two-seater out of the van and leaving it against a wall on the premises before fleeing the scene, thinking he had not been seen.

The pub owners then posted images from the footage on Facebook which showed the man dumping the sofa – and threatened to report the incident to police if the fly-tipper did not collect the couch within 24 hours.

‘To the owner of this white van, you have 24 hours to collect your couch which you so kindly dumped at our door. It isn’t our fault you didn’t have a permit for the tip.

‘If the couch is still there this time tomorrow, the matter will be passed to the police. Thanks.’

Just 24 hours later, it had been removed. Inspection of the CCTV showed that the same man and van piling the fly-tipped sofa back into his vehicle before driving off in the middle of the night.
