Honey Boo Boo and sister Pumpkin reunite with Mama June for first time in OVER A YEAR

Mama June Shannon came face to face with daughters Alana ‘Honey Boo Boo’ Thompson and Lauryn ‘Pumpkin’ Shannon for the first time in over a year, on Friday’s episode of Mama June: Road to Redemption.

The highly anticipated reunion was fraught with issues after 15-year-old Honey Boo Boo and 21-year-old Pumpkin confronted June over her extensive drug addiction and the effect it has had on them.

The conversation however is threatened when Pumpkin decides to give June a surprise drug test on the spot, sternly telling her mother that ‘if it’s not clean no meeting.’

The episode begins with June sitting down with family therapist Dr. Ish Major who mediates the reunion, as he tells her that just because she’s nine months sober doesn’t mean she’s free from relapse. 

‘You’re not out of the woods yet. Because if your head gets too big and you get too arrogant, you’re setting yourself up for a relapse because you’re gonna be blindsided,’ said Major.

June reveals her drug of choice was cocaine and maintains ‘I am not relapsing. I mean, I have worked too freaking hard to actually go five steps back.’

She takes a trip down memory lane where she revisits the low points including living in her car and at various hotels with fellow drug addict boyfriend Geno Doak. Dr. Major tells her, ‘They’re gonna need to see you take some real responsibility and accountability.’

At that point Pumpkin and Honey Boo Boo have arrived as they come face to face with June for the first time in over a year. June asks for a hug as her daughters stand in shock looking at her from afar. 

Upon a hug from Pumpkin, June bursts into tears ‘of joy’ and continues crying with Honey in her arms. Though there is a bit of levity in their initial encounter, they soon get into the heavier stuff. 

‘I’m hoping we can make up and look forward to the future. I really hope I don’t mess it up,’ June tells the camera in a confessional.  

‘I’m feeling so many different emotions. Like, I’m happy, I’m sad, I’m nervous, I’m excited. Like, maybe this might be the first step to being back a family again,’ Honey says in her interview. 

Despite the optimism, Pumpkin expresses her gripe with June and gets serious when she tells June she must take a drug test with them present.

As Pumpkin escorts June back to get tested, Dr. Major sits down and speaks to Honey one on one where she gets emotional about the effect June’s drug use has had on her. 

‘Like, she wasn’t there, through my whole first year of high school at all. I’m in tenth grade now. Like, I can’t even come home and tell her how I’m doing in school,’ as she compares her friends family dynamics to her own. 

She then asks, ‘Is it my fault she wanted to do drugs?’ conveying the weight she’s been carrying as her mom battles her addiction.

June confesses that she was very sick, alluding to the various times in her life where she battled, at one point spending upwards of $900K on drugs in one year.

She adds that she knows as a mother she’s been selfish with both going to rehab and her recovery, but is willing to put in the work to put their family back together. 

Despite her willingness, Honey confesses her level of trauma over the situation. ‘You don’t know how many nights I cried myself to sleep, just hoping and praying that you don’t overdose. I never knew if you were alive or dead anyways.’

And Pumpkin then jumps in sharing the stress she’s felt as Honey’s guardian and how she feels ‘robbed of a life’ on account of June’s actions. ‘There’s no–there’s no taking care of myself,’ she sobs while speaking about having to additionally care for husband Josh and their daughter Ella.  

June then turns it around on her daughters saying that she was ‘kind of pissed’ when they chose to walk away, Pumpkin then retorting that they exhausted the possibilities of their physical and mental capacities in trying to help her. 

June spoke about hitting a ‘dark wall,’ but wanted to start over fresh and went to rehab after previously checking out of the last one. She drops a bombshell on the girls when she tells them it was in fact Geno’s decision for them to get clean. 

She then tries to defend Geno to her daughters despite him being an enabling force when it came to drug use in June’s life. Despite their dislike of Geno, she confesses she’s not going to turn her back on her boyfriend.

Taking some level of accountability as both a mother and a recovering addict, June confesses ‘I guess I didn’t realize emotionally how much I f***ed everybody,’ maintaining that she must show them that she’s a changed woman.   

After the emotional meeting Pumpkin and Honey drive home and June is picked up by Geno. ‘They’re really hurt by both of us…but I actually told them I’m sorry for what I’ve done [and] for what we’ve caused,’ she tells Doak.  

During an intimate moment at home with Pumpkin and Alana post-meeting, her husband Josh prys them for information about the reunion, with both saying they were shocked she took responsibility for the first time.

Josh then drops another piece of surprising news. Sugar Bear — Honey’s estranged father — showed up at their house hoping to see her, and Josh tries to plan a meeting between them.

Honey had opened up about their relationship in the past, alleging that he had no interest in raising her once he re-married Jennifer in 2017.  Unbeknownst to Honey, Sugar is battling diabetes (which claimed his mother’s life) and he wants to tell her.  

Meanwhile June and Pumpkin prepare for their second meeting in a park. She tells Geno that though he needs to drop her off, he’s not allowed to see or speak to the Pumpkin for fear it would threaten their progress. 

As they meet at the park, June is met with a surprise visit from her granddaughter ‘Tink’ (Ella), despite Pumpkin asserting that she wasn’t ready to let June see her yet. ‘I feel so happy — everything that I’ve worked so hard to do is all coming together, and my reward is getting the family back together,’ June says.

The episode then cuts to Jennifer at home with Sugar Bear — her having no knowledge that he wants to rekindle with Honey. 

She becomes suspicious of her husband when he takes a private phone call with Josh about potentially reuniting with his daughter and tells her it’s just a work call, as he claims Jennifer doesn’t want him to have a relationship with Honey. 

Back at home with Josh and Honey, Pumpkin confesses that Geno crashed their meeting, speaking about the situation hostley. Honey tries to give him the benefit of the doubt that he’s been clean and doesn’t want Pumpkin’s resistance to set back the family’s progress. 

The episode ends with a pissed off June laying into Geno about his actions, however Pumpkin decides she wants to pull a fast one on Geno and shows up at their hotel which will unfold next week.
