Black’s character is CL4P-TP, a robot who comes to be known as Claptrap, who is quite sarcastic and not at all invested in the team around him.

The game takes place on a planet called Pandora, following a group of ‘vault hunters’ who are seeking a vault said to contain alien technology and other riches.

Borderlands was first released in 2009, selling over 2 million units that year alone, with a number of additional downloadable content (DLC) add-ons released, including one focusing on Claptrap dubbed Claptrap’s New Robot Revolution.

The game’s developers, Gearbox Software, followed up the original with Borderlands 2 in 2012, Borderlands: The Prequel-Sequel in 2014 and Borderlands 3 in 2019.

Black will reunite with director Eli Roth, who is taking the helm of Borderlands and previously directed Black in 2018’s The House With a Clock In Its Walls.

‘I am so excited to reunite with Jack, this time in the recording booth,’ director Roth said in a statement.

‘Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect to bring him to the big screen,’ Roth continued.

Nathan Kahane, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said the casting was, ‘one of the biggest no-brainer casting decisions we’ve ever made.

‘Everyone who’s ever played the game knows Jack is perfect for this part. We’re thrilled he will add his endless comic energy and voice to our film — he’ll bring so much to the movie,’ Kahane added.
