James Corden delivered a sombre monologue on Wednesday’s Late Late Show amid terrifying riots in Washington, D.C.

Supporters of President Donald Trump violently stormed the U.S. Capitol to protest his election loss to President-elect Joe Biden, leading to the death of four and terrified politicians scrambling to safety.

As celebrities flooded Twitter to condemn the actions, the Gavin And Stacey star, 42, used the opening of his show to hit out at the Trump – branding the politician a ‘lunatic’ – and to slam his ‘crazy army’ amid the chaos.

In the impassioned message, James stated: ‘I truly believe that the America people admire still exists. The America so many aspire to will be back. It’s been hijacked by a lunatic and his crazy army for the last four years. But that’s about to end.’

Authorities lost control as rioters entered the Capitol building vandalising and trespassing, with some of the MAGA mob making it in to Nancy Pelosi’s office.

A number of celebrities urged politicians to invoke the 25th amendment – which legislates for the Vice President to take control if the Commander-in-Chief is ‘unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office’ – and end his term two weeks early.

Adding to the call of the stars, James used the start of his show – typically laden with quips and jokes about the day – to deliver an uncharacteristically sombre message.

He said: ‘It’s a crazy, sad day, a day that will go down as a dark one in the long history of America. It felt sad, it felt wrong, it felt hopeless… I hope when the dust settles and we reflect on what happened on this awful day, that we still have hope.

‘Today, people across the world, would have looked at these pictures in Washington and wondered what on Earth has happened to this great country?

‘But I truly believe that the America they admire still exists. The America so many aspire to will be back. It’s been hijacked by a lunatic and his crazy army for the last four years. But that’s about to end.’

‘Because in two weeks on those same steps, where that mob fought and pushed past police, Joe Biden will be sworn in as president of the United States.’

‘Today was their last dance at the worst party that any of us have ever been to. Change is coming. Science is real. I really do believe that there are better times ahead.’

The protests came in tandem with the Republican congressional dispute of the election results ahead of Biden’s planned inauguration January 20.

Twitter suspended Trump’s account after a series of tweets that did little to quell the ongoing violence.

‘We have required the removal of three @realDonaldTrump Tweets that were posted earlier today for repeated and severe violations of our Civic Integrity Policy,’ the social media company said.

It continued: ‘This means that the account of @realDonaldTrump will be locked for 12 hours following the removal of these Tweets. If the Tweets are not removed, the account will remain locked.’
