Janet Street Porter says Tier 2 discriminates against single people

Loose Women’s Janest Street-Porter today vented her frustration over Tier 2 rules in London, branding them ‘confusing’ and unfair to single people.

The journalist, 73, said she was ‘fed up’ by the new restrictions, which were implemented at midnight on Saturday, and lack of clarity concerning the new rules.

She said she was ‘totally confused’ and added that ‘singletons’ were ‘discriminated against’ by the new regulations, which prevent people from mixing indoors with anyone from outside their household or support bubble.

Admitting she was ‘ranting’, Janet said that it prevents her from meeting friends in the evening because she has not formed a bubble.

Her comments came as the panel discussed the fact that Heath Secretary Matt Hancock was yesterday photographed without a face covering in the back of a chauffeured car.

Saira Khan also criticised the health secretary, saying he should set an example for the nation and wear his mask at all times.

Asked what she thought about Mr Hancock’s picture, Janet said she did not care about the Health Secretary because she’s already lost faith in him.

‘I’m not too bothered about Matt Hancock because I kinda gave up on him weeks ago,’ she said.

‘I am totally confused, I’ve started ranting now so apologies for that, because as a single person living in London in Tier 2, us singletons are completely discriminated against.

‘I like going out to have a meal with my friends in the evening, now I can’t,’ she added.

‘I am condemned to sit in at home, ’cause I ain’t got a bubble; I’m too old to have a bubble. I’m fed up, I’m completely fed up.’

A support bubble is where a single-adult household, or a single parent with children under 18, joins with another household of any size.

The bubble must be exclusive, meaning that once you’re in one you can’t switch to a different household, so if your partner was not in your support bubble prior to now, then you are not permitted to change.

She went on to criticise the further confusion regarding changing rules and localised decisions.

‘Britain now looks like a Monopoly board gone mental,’ she concluded.

Janet also compared the ‘showdown’ between Manchester mayor Andy Burnham and Prime Minister Boris Johnson to the Spaghetti Western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and said the debate was leading nowhere.

Fellow panelist Saira Khan said she felt Matt Hancock should ‘set an example for the nation’ by wearing his mask at all times.

‘I’m a busy mum, I work, I’m trying to get through all of this,’ Saira said.

‘Sometimes I watch the news and I might see Matt Hancock getting a car and visually think “It’s alright he’s not wearing his so I don’t need to wear a face mask”.’

‘Matt, wear your mask, set the example, stop giving us excuses, I’m not having it, it’s nonsense,’ she said.

Viewers were not impressed with the panelist’s ranting, especially annoyed at Khan’s impassioned plea.

‘Oh c’mon, even the #LooseWomen panel are confused by the rules as a result of them being contradictory! Take note Boris Johnson and Downing Street this needs sorting ASAP,’ one said.

‘Is Saira aware she’s wearing a microphone? Why’s she shouting,’ one asked.

‘Alright Saira, calm down, stop shouting,’ said another.

The spokesperson for Matt Hancock told Loose Women: ‘There are different rules for chaffeur driven cars to private hire cars and taxis.

‘Ministers are advised to wear face coverings but it is not a legal requirement.’

The government has also said that face coverings are put into all ministerial cars and ministers are advised to wear them.
