Jessica Chastain replaces Michelle Williams as female lead in upcoming HBO limited series Scenes From A Marriage

A major change is on the cards for HBO’s limited series drama Scenes From A Marriage.

Jessica Chastain is replacing Michelle Williams as the female lead role that will co-star opposite Oscar Issac, due to a scheduling conflict with Williams. 

Chastain and Isaac have plenty of history together as they were classmates at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, and they were the leading actors in the 2014 crime drama film A Most Violent Year.

Scenes From A Marriage is an adaptation of a 1973 Swedish miniseries written and directed by Ingmar Bergman that starred Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson. 

For the new series, Hagai Levi, the co-creator and co-producer of the Showtime drama series The Affair (2014-2019), will juggle the duties of writer, director and executive producer.

The new version will reexamine the original miniseries’ iconic depiction of love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage and divorce through the lens of a contemporary American couple, which will be played by Chastain and Isaac.

Williams will reportedly stay on as an executive producer along with Chastain, Levi , Issac, as well as Ellenberg via Media Res, Lars Blomgren, Daniel Bergman, Blair Breard, Amy Herzog, according to Deadline.

The series is a co-production with Media Res and Endeavor Content.

Shooting is expected to begin soon.

Most recently, Chastain wrapped up shooting the international spy thriller film, The 355, that’s slated to premiere January 15, 2021. The star-studded cast also includes Lupita Nyong’o, Penélope Cruz, Diane Kruger, Fan Bingbing, Sebastian Stan and Édgar Ramírez.

The two-time Oscar-nominated actress will also star in the upcoming drama film The Eyes Of Tammy Faye and the American-British film The Forgiven.

Along with the scheduling conflict, Williams also has her hands full playing the attentive mommy role with the arrival of her second child in June; her first with new husband Thomas Kail.

Williams also has a 14-year-old daughter named Matilda, whom she shared with Heath Ledger until his death in 2008.
