Kate Ceberano breaks down in tears on Sunrise as she reflects on her teenage daughter’s future amid the Covid-19 pandemic

The Covid-19 lockdowns have had a huge impact on people around the world, and it’s no different for Kate Ceberano and her family.

The Australian singer, 54, broke down in tears on Monday while discussing the impact of the pandemic on her 16-year-old daughter, Gypsy.

During an interview on Sunrise, the Bedroom Eyes star explained that she ‘felt’ the lockdown through her daughter’s eyes while writing her new song Hold On.

‘I have a teenage daughter, and she was sitting upstairs from me when I was writing that song,’ she said.

‘And for hours on end, alone, often. And I could tell she was pining for company, and she was pining for a career that hadn’t started, pining for a boy she hadn’t kissed. She was pining for a life she hadn’t lived.’

A tearful Kate continued: ‘I just felt it through her eyes, actually. I think I’ve had everything I’d ever dreamt I’d have, and I thought, “Gee, this is really unfair.”‘

Kate has spent much of the pandemic isolating at her home in Victoria with her husband, Lee Rogers, and their daughter, Gypsy.

But the hit-maker has been keeping busy and is back with a new album for 2021.

Her 18th studio album, which was released this week, is called Sweet Inspiration.

Kate told The Sunday Project she found the recording process therapeutic during the lockdowns in Victoria.

‘It was like a remedy. It was like the very thing we all needed just to get through. I’m glad we did it,’ she said.

‘Even when I look at the video footage [from recording the album], none of us were bothered about the face or the hair or the makeup or how we’re looking.

‘It was, “No mate, we’re making music and it means something for us to be together.”‘
