The longstanding ABC singing competition will be narrowing contestants down from 16 to 12 following an overnight vote that secured 10 participants.

Perhaps the most pressing plot twist thus far — judge Luke Bryan was sidelined from the show unexpectedly following a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

‘I’m sad to say I won’t be a part of tonight’s first live @americanidol show. I tested positive for COVID but I’m doing well and look forward to being back at it soon,’ he tweeted.

Paula Abdul was tapped to step in temporarily until the country singer is rendered symptom free following a mandatory quarantine.

Bryan had previously spoken about the challenges of filming the often ’emotional’ show during the pandemic in conversation with People.

‘The interesting thing is just trying to navigate all of the new rules of COVID-19…The fact that me and Lionel [Richie] and Katy can’t walk out there and do the human element — hug and show support and love, is very, very tough,’ he said.
