Knives Out sequels could potentially earn star Daniel Craig and Rian Johnson $100 MILLION EACH

Just a week after two Knives Out sequels were announced on Netflix, new details reveal just how lucrative the deal really is.

The deal was quite the surprise, since it was believed that Lionsgate was planning on distributing the sequels like they did with the original 2019 thriller.

New details have surfaced about the deal through a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, revealing returning star Daniel Craig, writer-director Rian Johnson and producer Ram Bergman would each walk away with $100 million each.

The deal was originally believed to be worth more than $450 million total, with THR now confirming its worth at $469 million.

The report also reveals that the deal gives Johnson, who will both write the script and direct the sequels, has been given, ‘immense creative control.’

The director does not have to take any notes from the streaming service, with the only contingencies in place being that Craig must star in both movies, returning as Detective Benoit Blanc, and they must have at least the budgets of the first movie, said to be $40 million.

When all is said and done, Craig, Johnson and Bergman are poised to walk away with $100 million each, though no further details about their deals were given.

Both Johnson and Bergman retained the full rights to the Knives Out franchise themselves, with their company T-Street striking a one-movie deal with Media Rights Capital to finance the first Knives Out.

An MRC rep said the company was ‘proud’ to have partnered with Johnson and Bergman for Knives Out, adding they, ‘have always controlled the rights” to the franchise.’

While both Johnson and Bergman are said to be big believers in the theatrical experience, that was before the COVID-19 pandemic happened.

Johnson and Bergman had hoped to start production this summer, and as they questioned the viability of a theatrical experience amid the pandemic, they shopped the sequel to streamers, with Netflix landing a pair of follow-ups.

A source stressed that the questionable viability of the theatrical experience with the pandemic became a ‘perfect storm,’ with an insider stressing, ‘This would not have happened a year ago.’

The original Knives Out earned $311 million worldwide from just a $40 million budget, and while sources admit Netflix ‘overpaid’ for the franchise, it’s worth it.

‘Yes, it’s overpaying, but Netflix is playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers,’ another source said.

‘It takes a proven theatrical commodity off the board and puts it in their pocket. And it’s another way they re-educate audiences to think of streaming and their company above a studio,’ the source added.
