Matt Lucas reveals Noel Fielding DREAMED he was Bake Off co-host

Matt Lucas has revealed he got his new job as Great British Bake-Off host after Noel Fielding DREAMED they were working alongside one another.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain on Friday, the 46-year-old said he took the role because of the sweet perks of the job.

He said: ‘Free cake are you kidding it’s a no brainer! They were talking to various people and apparently Noel had a dream that I was the co-presenter.

Who needs a CV? Matt Lucas told GMB on Friday he got the job on Great British Bake-Off after Noel Fielding DREAMED he was his co-host

‘He said, “Oh I think Matt would be a good co presenter”, inevitably I was good in his dream.’

‘I had to audition for the show, but they couldn’t tell people I was auditioning for Bake-Off, so I had to go to a garden centre and interview people and said we were doing a horticultural show.’

Matt also revealed that he is in constant contact with David Walliams and they are keen on doing a Little Britain reunion.

Doing his bit: Matt told Lorraine Kelly that he has released his Baked Potato song and the money will be going to Feed NHS to make sure the frontline stay fed in these troubling times

Doing his bit: Matt told Lorraine Kelly that he has released his Baked Potato song and the money will be going to Feed NHS to make sure the frontline stay fed in these troubling times

He said: ‘We message each other most days and send each other those silly memes.

‘He’s got lots of books to write and I’ve got some writing to do as well, we are going to do something with Little Britain again.’

The funnyman has partnered up with Damian Lewis, Helen McCrory and John Vincent, the CEO of Leon Restaurants to set up an organisation called Feed NHS, to try and sort of redirect some of those meals to the people that needed them the most.

He has re-recorded his famous Shooting Stars Baked Potato song, now called Thank You Baked Potato in order to raise money for Feed NHS during the coronavirus pandemic.

The song has been rewritten to include key messages about how to avoid spreading and catching Covid-19, urging people to stay at home amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Matt told GMB: ‘I was watching the news last Tuesday and seeing people are still going out doing crazy things and I thought maybe I should re record my Baked Potato song and update the lyrics.

‘It’s had several million views and lots of people are uploading their own version. They’re released it as a single today and it’s already at number five [in the charts].

Things to do: Matt also said that he and David Walliams WILL make a Little Britain reunion but said they are both busy writing at the moment

‘All the money raised will go to feed the NHS, to take some of the food that is served and restaurants and get that food to NHS workers in hospitals.’

Matt continued: ‘I feel the best way to get to the parents is to get to the kids first, it’s quite an overwhelming time, there’s something in the song there’s new rules they have to learn but they’re kind of easy to remember in the song.

‘I have to thank all the people in the music industry who have come together to help bring this song so people can buy it.

He said: ‘There’s a whole team of people working like mad. I’m in my bedroom at the moment and I’m having to be sensible.

‘I have a housemate, but he has an exercise bike in his bedroom. Yesterday we went past two weeks, so I can now into his bedroom and use my exercise bike. I’ve got no excuse now. I need to sort this out before Bake Off happens.’

Matt also spoke about his Baked Potato single with Dermot O’Leary on his Radio 2 Breakfast Show on Friday.

Spreading the word: Matt also spoke to Roman Kemp on his Capital Breakfast show on Friday morning as he promoted his charity single

He said ‘Yeah, it’s felt like a really important thing to do right now and so probably the only creative thing I’ve done in the last few weeks was rewrite four lines of an old song but it went a bit viral.

‘So it’s out today, you can buy it on Amazon, iTunes and all the usual download things and we’ve got a lovely video by a brilliant animator… if you go to www.thankyoubakedpotato.com you can watch the video, you can download the song, you can donate to Feed NHS. You can do the whole thing.

‘I’m up against Harry Styles and Dua Lipa for Number One but I just want to raise as much money as possible for Feed NHS. That’s what’s in my mind really.’

It’s a good job he has been keeping busy as Bake-Off filming was due to start filming in three weeks but has naturally been postponed.

Matt also told Roman Kemp on Capital Breakfast: ‘I mean we’re just waiting on the government to let us know when we can do it, it gives all of our bakers more time to practice and it means I’ll have an even bigger appetite for all those cakes so it’s fine.

Tune into Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp, weekdays from 6am – 10am
