Let freedom ring: Matthew McConaughey, 51, delivered a positive message to celebrate Independence Day on Sunday, calling for unity, amid rumors that he’s flirting with a gubernatorial run in his native Texas

‘Let’s admit this last year’s trip around the sun was another head scratcher, but let’s also remember that we are babies – as a country we are basically going through puberty in comparison to other countries’ timelines – and we’re going to get the growing pains,’ he said. ‘And we are going through growing pains, this is not an excuse to say, this is just a reality.’

McConaughey, who won an Oscar for Best Actor in 2014 for Dallas Buyers Club, said that the country needs to continue to learn, mature, strive and climb, amid a year marked by political and social divides in society.

‘We got to keep building and maintain hope along the way as we continue to evolve,’ the A-lister said. ‘Why? Cause it’s who we are; Why? because the alternative sucks!’

He said that citizens of the U.S. remain aspirational and ‘constantly in motion’ in an effort to get wiser, braver and more productive.

‘We got to keep realizing that we’re a place where our individual perspectives and desires need to be appreciative and supportive of our collective responsibilities as Americans – hence the United States of America,’ McConaughey said. ‘We’re all in this together and if you don’t purchase that, move on, go somewhere else.’

He continued: ‘So, as we celebrate the red, white and blue this weekend, let’s just be sure to reflect a minute, take a little bit of inventory on where we’ve come from, where we are, and how and where we want to go from here.’

McConaughey encouraged a sense of harmony as the country moves forward from a troubling time.

‘On the way to being the best we can be, now what if that was the song that each of us said, “I can’t not sing that song,”‘ McConaughey said. ‘I want to be a little bit better, let’s be on the way to being the best we can be, let’s be on the way to making that a song we can’t not sing.

‘Why? Because it’s who we are, it’s who we gotta be and again, the alternative sucks.’
