Matthew McConaughey reveals how listening to Dwight Yoakam helped him overcome sadness of losing a friend and more personal stories in new Spotify show

He’s certainly the man of the moment, having recently whipped up his fan base into reading his promisingly raucous memoir Greenlights, released today. 

But now, admirers of Matthew McConaughey can listen to Oscar-winning actor’s wild tales too, on an intimate new show he’s made with Spotify

The Texan-native has teamed up with the streaming platform, to hand-pick his own playlist, while also divulging personal anecdotes to each song, including how listening to country singer Dwight Yoakam once helped him get over the death of a friend, who tragically died in a car accident.

‘The year was 1986, and a good buddy of mine had just been lost in a car crash,’ Matthew explains in one of many revealing moments on the show. ‘I was lost, I was depressed, I didn’t understand it.’

Matthew, 50, then reveals how his brother Pat introduced him to Dwight Yoakam and persuaded him to see the country singer play live in Texas, an experience which helped the actor overcome the sadness he was feeling. 

Elsewhere in the show, which can be listened to on mobile devices, Matthew describes how the song Pink Houses by John Mellencamp shaped his patriotism, and Son of Virginia by Clutch is his favourite song to pump iron to.

Similar to tuning into the actor’s very own radio station, Matthew imparts his famous words of wisdom between each track, including this gem: ‘Next time you’re invited on a boat trip… make sure it ain’t the Titanic.’

And yes, there are quite a few ‘alright, alright, alrights’ peppered between the playlist, that features the likes of Silver and Gold by U2, Lonely by Mishka, and It Ain’t All Flowers by Sturgill Simpson.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Matthew’s wife Camila Alves McConaughey shared an adorable moment on Instagram, with his mother Mary.
