Netflix and the creators of Outer Banks sued over ‘stealing’ plot of their teen drama from author K.W. Wooten

Independently-published author K.W. Wooten has reportedly sued Netflix and the creators of Outer Banks for ‘stealing’ the plot of their teen drama, which started streaming April 15.

In 2016, Wooten released Pennywise: The Hunt for Blackbeard’s Treasure! about four young adults discovering buried treasure from a fabled shipwreck along North Carolina’s outer banks.

‘The archetypes of his protagonists and those of the show are almost identical,’ the lawsuit claimed – according to TMZ.

‘And so are the villains – namely, a rich benefactor and a corrupt cop. He also says the plot is virtually the same … including clues they find and places it leads them to.’

K. (first name Kevin) noted that co-creators Jonas & Josh Pate said they got the inspiration for Outer Banks while living in Wilmington where he had published hard copies of Pennywise.

Wooten demands that the creators (including Shannon Burke) add a title card in the opening credits highlighting him and his Goonies-style novel, and he’s also after damages.

Meanwhile, the cast and crew of Outer Banks have been hard at work filming the second season of the adventure mystery.
