New power-of-attorney online service for managing loved-one’s finances

New power-of-attorney online service allows families to manage their loved ones’ finances

Families can now manage their loved ones’ finances and wellbeing using a new online service.

A lasting power of attorney is a vital document that appoints a trusted individual to manage your affairs if you are unable to.

But the current paper-based process means it can take weeks to contact organisations, as physical documents need to be posted back and forth.

To reduce delays, the Office of Public Guardian has launched a digital service called ‘Use a lasting power of attorney’ (gov.uk/opg).

Those acting as an attorney will be provided with a secure code which they must then enter online to confirm their status.

Once this is done they will be able to send official documents electronically.

However, experts warn that digitalising the process could lead to a rise in financial abuse.

Kelly Greig, of law firm Irwin Mitchell, says: ‘We’ve been successful in resisting a fully online service and maintaining wet signatures for this very reason; the secure code could [also] be open to abuse.’

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson says physical signatures are still used to protect vulnerable people.
