Olympic gold medalist McKayla Maroney reveals she has kidney stones after being rushed to the emergency room for ‘severe pain’ early Thursday morning

Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney was rushed to the emergency room in Newport Beach, California with ‘severe pain’ in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

Maroney, 25, revealed via her Instagram Story that doctors discovered she was suffering from kidney stones.

Before describing her ordeal, the California native posted a photo from outside the Benjamin & Carmela Du Emergency Pavilion in Orange County.

She then uploaded a snap of herself laying in a hospital bed with her eyes closed and a pink mask pulled below her chin. 

‘Tuesday I was throwing up all day, with severe pain in my back and stomach,” Maroney wrote atop the photo.   

‘Had to come to ER at 3am because pain kept getting worse, and I couldn’t stop throwing up.’  

Moroney, 25, then added: ‘Just got my CT Scan back. I have a few kidney stones.’

About 12 hours later, Maroney gave an update on her condition.

‘Home from ER. They treated me wonderful, but unfortunately nothing has changed, just on pain management,’ she wrote along with a photo of her smoothie sitting in front of a vase full of flowers.

‘This smoothie is literally the only thing I can even think of stomaching.’ 

Most kidney stones form on the interior surface of the kidney, and can be result in excruciating and unforgettable pain, according to the John Hopkins University School Of Medicine.

Maroney was a member of the American women’s gymnastics team dubbed the Fierce Five at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where she won a gold medal in the team and a silver medal in the individual vault event. 

She won gold medals in the team and vault competitions at the 2011 World Championships. 

The 5ft3in gymnast defended her World title and won the gold medal on vault at the 2013 World Championships.

In 2017, one year after retiring from competitive gymnastics, Maroney revealed she was among those sexually abused by disgraced USA Gymnastics doctor, Larry Nassar, who was eventually convicted  and sent to prison in 2018.      

She alleged Nassar repeatedly molested her, starting when she was 13 years old until her retirement from the sport.
