Olympic swimmer Scott Miller has been arrested at his Sydney home over an alleged large scale ice syndicate involving $2million of ice concealed in candles.

Miller, 45, was one of two men arrested by NSW Police about 6am on Tuesday morning, with police storming his waterfront Rozelle unit in the city’s inner west.

Miller was surprised when police barged in, with further drugs allegedly found at his property this morning, according to a senior police official.

A 47-year-old alleged associate of Miller’s was also arrested at Balmain and a business address in Bankstown was also raided.

Police will allege Miller’s drug syndicate was planning to distribute the candles to ice-riddled regional towns across New South Wales. The town of Albury, on the Victorian border, has been identified as a particular alleged focus.

Drugs and Firearms Squad Commander John Watson said: ‘For all intents and purposes the candles looked like normal candles, but they were laced with death and misery.’

Detectives discovered the alleged drug candles weeks ago, with half a kilogram of meth moulded into the glass containers.

The ice was of a ‘very high purity’, Detective Superintendent Watson said, who added that Miller and his alleged associate had a long-standing relationship.

Miller is Australian swimming royalty, having won silver and bronze medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in the butterfly and the 4 x 100m medley relay respectively.

He is the ex-husband of the late socialite Charlotte Dawson, who died by suicide in 2014 after a relentless troll campaign.

Miller has had a troubled recent history. In an interview with 60 Minutes that year, the athlete admitted he was battling a drug addiction.

Five years ago he worked as a drug awareness and prevention speaker with the Church of Scientology’s Narconon program, according to his LinkedIn profile.

The role involved him ‘showing people addicted to drugs or alcohol that there is another way to live life’ and conducting drug interventions.

It is unclear whether he is still involved in the program. Local Scientology officials were approached for comment.

More recently, he was a business development manager for a company called reinteractive.

Both men were taken to Newtown Police Station in the city’s inner west. Charges are yet to be laid.
