Emergency services have launched a desperate search for a man who is feared to have drowned after jumping into the Thames to save his friend.

The 31-year-old man dived into the stretch of river by the village of Cookham, Berkshire, when his friend into trouble.

However he failed to resurface and has not been seen more than four hours later.

One man managed to be pulled out of the water by friends but he was unconscious and need CPR before being rushed to hospital in a serious condition

The pair had been part of a group of six friends who had travelled from Uxbridge in Middlesex for an afternoon by the river. 

Police, fire and rescue and air ambulance crews all rushed to the scene.

Thames Valley Police tweeted: ‘We are on the scene in Odney Lane, in Cookham, following a report of a fear for welfare.

‘It was reported that a man had entered the water. Officers are working to locate the man, who was not seen to get out of the water.’

A bystander who had been at the river bank said that they had earlier seen the three men jumping off the weir and doing backflips into the water. 

‘That was about 4.30pm. Later, after we had left the riverside, we heard loads of police sirens and came rushing back,’ they said.
