Paris Hilton says Sarah Silverman’s apology ‘really means a lot’ to her: ‘It really moved me’

Paris Hilton says it ‘really means a lot’ to her that Sarah Silverman has apologized for the callous jokes she made about her at the 2007 MTV Awards, despite being 14-years late.

The 39-year-old socialite reacted to Silverman’s apology, which was issued out on Thursday, during an impromptu episode of her This Is Paris podcast, also posted Thursday.

‘[Sarah] was so genuine and so sweet and it really moved me. I felt emotional hearing it and I could tell that she really did mean what she said as she was apologizing,’ remarked Hilton.

‘I was shocked when I read it at first and pleasantly surprised,’ admitted the socialite, 39, after she was made aware of Silverman’s sorrowful words in an article sent to her by a friend.

‘And I just wanna just leave a message to her. To say something back: Thank you. I really, really appreciate you doing that. 

‘I know it is difficult for anyone to apologize and for someone to do that really means a lot,’ said Paris.

Paris revealed that she ‘got a little teary eyed’ listening to Silverman recall making eye contact with her at the MTV Movie Awards in 2007, after rattling off the now ill fated jokes.

‘[Sarah] saw my face and she said that her “heart dropped” and that made me a little emotional because that is actually really sweet because I did not know.

‘When she was up there [on stage performing her monologue at the award show] it just did not seem that way, but obviously when you are up doing a comedy sketch it’s not like you’re going to be how you truly feel inside,’ Paris acknowledged. 

She went on to read the entirety of Silverman’s apology aloud for her listeners, later adding that she ‘was not expecting an apology’ nor was she ‘asking for one.’

Referencing to her sister Nicky Hilton’s passionate ‘demand’ for an apology from Silverman, Paris chopped it up to her just ‘being very over protective.’

‘I was very shocked when I got it and I really just appreciate it so much. And I am glad her comedy has grown and it she realizes that it is not nice to make fun of people. And I think everyone learns that in life,’ she continued.

The fragrance aficionado admitted that ‘Sarah is hilarious’  and that she has ‘listened to her comedy and had always been a big fan, prior to that moment’ on stage at the MTV Movie Awards in 2007.

‘I always just though that she was so funny, but not when she is making fun of people. I think she is funny when she is just being her funny self.

Paris stressed that it is ‘nice to hear that [Sarah] has had a lot of time to reflect’ on how her words can impact others.

‘Not just my situation with her, but other situations. It seemed like, just from listening to her podcast right now about it, that she sees and she has really grown as a person.

‘I know where she is coming from because, just like everyone, we have all said things in our past that we felt bad about and we later regretted.

‘I think everyone is guilty of doing that. It’s human nature, but it is important that people can learn from their mistakes and what they’ve said 

‘Just hearing that, the way she was speaking, is just so genuine and sweet. I am just so used to hearing her be funny and make her jokes. So, to hear that kind of vulnerable side to her and showing that she has a heart,’ she gushed.

Paris also reiterated that she ‘never got’ the apology letter that Sarah claimed she sent to the heiress, following her MTV Movie Awards hosting gig.

‘I was just listing about how you sent me a letter a couple of days later and I don’t know who you gave it to, so I am curious as to who did not pass me on that letter because I would have LOVED to have read it many years ago.

‘That night at the MTV Movie Awards has haunted me for a very long time, so apologies are never late so it is ok.

‘But, yeah, I do wish that who ever you gave [the letter] to did give it to me because that would have meant a lot back then, especially back then, when I was going through so much.

Paris concluded her nearly 11-minute response by, once again, thanking her for admitting her wrongdoings, before voicing that she hopes they can start a ‘clean, fresh slate’ with one another.

Paris’s impromptu response came just hours after Silverman, 50, issued her lengthy mea culpa to the socialite on the latest episode of The Sarah Silverman Podcast where she admitted she would ‘never do those jokes today.’ 

Paris revealed on her This Is Paris podcast on Monday, that she was still angry with the comedian calling her jokes ‘disgusting and cruel and mean.’

‘You know, as she said herself on the podcast, this would never happen today and she’s right, I wouldn’t. I would never do those jokes today,’ Silverman began. 

‘I came up in a time when talk show hosts and comedians hired to make fun of pop culture were roasting the biggest celebrities and pop culture icons at the time and nobody was bigger than Paris Hilton,’ she continued by way of explanation.

‘So here we are in an awakened world and I am totally into it, it’s how we grow, it’s how we change,’ Silverman said before launching into a full blown apology to Paris.

‘I’m super down with reflecting on the past and my part in perpetuating real ugly s**t,’  she said. ‘And yes, we can continue to litigate the past, but I do believe that maybe that should be coupled with taking into account any growth that has come with those passing years.’

As a refresher, Paris had been due to check into prison hours after the 2007 awards ceremony for violating her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case and was mocked by Sarah during the show as she sat in the crowd. 

Silverman recollected: ‘While I was thrilled at the success of my monologue, I remember spotting her in the audience, I really do, and I remember seeing that look on her face and my heart sank. There was a person under there. A couple days later I wrote her a letter apologizing, felt awful and I never heard back, I certainly wouldn’t expect to anyways.’

As it turned out, Hilton never received the apology letter and harbored major resentment for the comics cruel and callous jokes for well over a decade. 

‘I regretted the jokes not years later, but kind of immediately,’ she admitted. ‘Here I am, 14 years later, telling you, Paris, that I am really sorry. I was then and I am, much more completely and with far more understanding I think, now.’

‘I can’t imagine what you were going through at the time. My understanding of humanity through the lens of my work as a comedian had not yet merged and I’m sorry I hurt you. Comedy is not evergreen. We can’t change the past, so what’s crucial is that we change with the times.’ 

She added: ‘I felt it the second I saw your face that night. It feels terrible to know you have hurt someone and it’s important to make it right. I hope this does that.’

During her podcast this week, Hilton revealed that at the time she had been nervous to go to the event, so when she was the butt of Silverman’s jokes it was intolerable.  

Detailing her version of events, Paris said: ‘I was so shocked and surprised because I had actually met her a few years before at an event and she was sweet.

‘I was obviously very nervous and knew I was about to check into a jail a few hours later, I put on a brave face and she literally pummeled me, so mean so cruel.

‘I was sitting there, wanting to die, I was holding back tears, I had tears in my eyes… I literally wanted to run out of the entire room. The whole audience was laughing and she would not stop.

‘It was so painful especially with what I was going through in my life, it was really hard.’

Sarah had said. ‘I heard to make her feel more comfortable in prison the guards are going to paint the bars to look like penises, I am just afraid she is going to break her teeth on those things. 

Paris served three days of her 45-day prison sentence. 

Nicky said: ‘Mom always told us you don’t know someone until you have walked a mile in their she’s and here Sarah was…. saying the most disgusting, vile, awful hurtful things.’ 

‘It’s abuse,’ Paris added of what Sarah did.

Nicky said because Sarah apologized to Britney after she similarly slammed her, she now needs to apologize to Paris.

‘The sexual, disgusting remarks were so horrific, very, very, very disappointing, that should never of happened to a young girl sitting in the audience or anyone, you should not let a person be humiliated.’
