Police have launched an appeal after the door of a small aircraft was found on a motorway.

Wiltshire Police’s specialist operations department, which includes the roads policing unit, took to social media to appeal for the owner of the mysterious door to ‘come forward’ after it was discovered on the M4 near Swindon.

The metal door, which is white with a clear glass window and yellow and grey stripes, was found in lane one of the motorway on January 9.

The forces's specialist operations unit took to Twitter to ask the owner of the 'unusual debris' to 'come forward and collect it'

Taking to Twitter the force shared pictures of the ‘unusual debris’ and called on the owner to ‘come forward and collect it’.

They wrote: ‘Unusual debris! What appears to be a door from a light aircraft, removed from lane one of the the M4 near Swindon on Saturday 9th January. 

‘If the owner would like to come forward to collect it, please get in touch. #insecureload.’

Following the unusual appeal, social media users were left scratching their heads at the unexpected debris.

One user wrote: ‘Too dusty and with minor damage to be from an airborne plane. 

‘Most probably fell down from a lorry on his way to a graveyard for scrapping. The hinges look perfect.’

Social media users were left scratching their heads at the unusual, with one claiming it most probably fell from a lorry

Another person added: ‘Fairly open and shut case.’
