Police raid a BABY SHOWER for breaking Covid rules

Video footage has captured the moment police raided a house to find 20 people inside enjoying a baby shower.

Body-worn footage of officers entering the house in Hornchurch, east London, on Sunday shows the group sitting around a table covered with food and a balloon arch at one end of the room.

The two organisers, men aged 22 and 44, were both reported for breaking lockdown rules and now face a £200 fine each.

This comes after police in Hampshire found a ‘hot tub’ party at a property in Gosport on Sunday, where one of the occupants claimed to be unaware of the pandemic.

A man and woman were also slapped with Covid fines after they made a 260 mile round trip to Yorkshire to find a Sunday roast.

The celebrations were in full wing

Driver who got stuck trying to take his Land Rover up snow-covered mountain is fined £200

Police were forced to rescue a Covid rule-breaker after he got his 4×4 stuck on the side of a snow-covered mountain.

The man faces a £200 fine for disobeying the stay-at-home law and is set to be ordered to pay for the cost of the rescue operation costing hundreds of pounds in public money.

North Wales Police condemned his behaviour as he was illegally off-roading in sub-zero temperatures when he got bogged down and had to phone for help.

North Wales Police Rural Crime Team were dispatched to the hillside – called Worlds End – in the shadow of the 499 metres (1,637ft) Ruabon Mountain near Llangollen.

After hauling him back on to the road, they said he’d broken the lockdown law and it was also illegal because his antics could damage a site of special scientific interest.

Police released images showing the vehicle stuck on the snow-covered hillside yesterday afternoon.

It is the latest example of people flouting lockdown rules in Wales this month despite government pleas for people to stay home.

Guests at the party included young children and teenagers, as well as people in their late 40s.

The party goers avoided new £800 fines – which were announced by Home Secretary Priti Patel last week – because the fines only came into force this week, after the party had been held.

Chief Superintendent Stephen Clayman, from the Met’s East Area Basic Command Unit, said: ‘This gathering had people of widely different ages and from different households present.

‘Whilst I fully understand that people want to get together to celebrate events, this is definitely not the time to do it in person.

‘A gathering like this can have tragic consequences for all those involved and risks spreading this terrible virus to our loved ones and the wider community.

‘Please have no doubt, we are determined to deal robustly with those who breach the Covid regulations in this way.’

Elsewhere, police in Hampshire blocked off a car park to catch and fine 26 people for gathering for a car meet in breach of Covid-19 regulations.

Officers shut off the car park at Blacknest Industrial Estate in Alton on Saturday evening after finding a large number of vehicles including BMWs, Nissans and Toyotas – from as far afield as Shropshire, Kent, Surrey and Berkshire.

A force spokesman said that people inside the cars were from different households with many not wearing face coverings.

Officers also caught a man and woman after they’d travelled from Derbyshire to Yorkshire in search of a Sunday dinner.

The pair, in their 20s, told officers that one of their mum’s had ‘let them down’ after promising to cook for them, so the duo ended up driving 130 miles to York in search of a takeaway roast.

A police spokesperson said: ‘We know nobody does Yorkshire puddings better than us here in Yorkshire.

‘But they’re really not worth getting into trouble for.

‘While most people continued to stay home and stay safe, our officers encountered a man and a woman who drove from Derbyshire to look for something to eat in York.

What are the rules around gatherings?

Under current Covid laws, you must not leave or be outside of your home except where you have a ‘reasonable excuse’.

The police can take action against you if you meet in larger groups. This includes breaking up illegal gatherings and issuing fines (fixed penalty notices).

You can be given a Fixed Penalty Notice of £200 for the first offence, doubling for further offences up to a maximum of £6,400.

If you hold, or are involved in holding, an illegal gathering of over 30 people, the police can issue fines of £10,000.

But last week, Priti Patel announced that people attending illegal house parties will now face £800 fines as police tighten their clampdown on coronavirus rule-breaking.

The Home Secretary announced the hefty penalty for anyone attending gatherings of 15 or more people as she lashed out at revellers for spreading Covid.

The fines, which come into place this week, will double for each repeat offence, up to a maximum of £6,400.

Hosts of illegal parties are already eligible for a £10,000 fine.

‘Following further enquiries, they told officers that one of their mums was going to cook them Sunday lunch but had ‘let them down’.

‘So they decided to come to York in search of a takeaway roast instead.

‘After all the usual checks were carried out, the pair who are in their 20s were given Covid fixed penalty notices.

‘Driving 130 miles in search of Sunday lunch is not an essential journey.

‘It’ll be great when we can go out for a Sunday roast with family and friends.’

On Sunday, Gosport police posted on Facebook: ‘REPORTED! Last night persons were reported for breaching COVID-19 regulations, after holding a hot tub party in the back garden.

‘One occupant claimed they were unaware of the global pandemic, and he was almost arrested after refusing to provide his details #WeAreInThisTogether.’

And a funeral director from Mansfield has been hit with a £10,000 fine for organising a funeral in Hertfordshire with almost 150 people in attendance.

The director was hit with the fine after Hertfordshire Police were made aware of the event which was due to take place in Welwyn Garden City last Thursday.

Under lockdown rules, only 30 people are allowed to attend a funeral in order to prevent the spread of the virus.

Hertfordshire Police say close to 150 people were actually in attendance. The fine was then issued to the Mansfield funeral director for organising the event.
