Grande with protein, please! Proffee trend sweeps social media and even hits Costa as foodies add protein powder to their morning brew to boost weightloss and improve their workouts
- Latest drink going viral on social media is proffee – a fusion of coffee and protein
- It is made when people add scoop of flavoured protein powder to their espresso
- More than 300,00 people have posted snaps of drink under #proffee on TikTok
A year into lockdown with people still unable to sit down in a cafe many have got creative with trying new drinks from the dalgona coffee to the Percy Pig cocktail.
And the latest twist drink going viral on social media is a proffee – a fusion of coffee and protein – which is made when people add a scoop of flavoured protein powder to their espresso.
Some people believe combining protein with the caffeine in your morning brew boosts weight loss and improves workouts.
While the latter is a natural stimulant that can improve your muscles’ contractions and resistance to fatigue when consumed an hour before exercising, protein powder helps your muscles recover and get stronger.
It also appeals to dieters as protein tends to reduce hunger and promote feelings of fullness, and may provide a slight metabolism boost because it requites your body to burn more calories when breaking it down than carbohydrates or fat.
Often served over ice, the coffee trend has gone viral with more than 300,00 people using the hashtag #proffee on TikTok, while 80,000 have done the same on Instagram.
Made in a variety of ways, the creamy coffee is perfect for those who want to add a high protein twist to their morning coffee, especially if they tend to skip breakfast.
Usually made with iced coffee, many creative online foodies have shared how they make the drink, including adding a shot of espresso to a pre-made protein drink.
Health experts have given the drink the go ahead, but warned foodies to be careful of adding too many sugary syrups.
Simon Jurkiw, Performance Nutritionist at sports and active nutrition brand bulk told FEMAIL: ‘We’re obsessing over this trend at bulk – what better way to upgrade your morning coffee than by combining it with a deliciously flavoured protein?
‘We’ve opted for a salted caramel version that pairs perfectly with our zero calorie syrup. ‘
‘This is the perfect indulgence with a high-protein hit to get your day started right.’
