Created in 1974, the Miguel de Cervantes Prize is the most important award in Spanish literature with the winner receiving 125,000 euros.

Candidates are nominated by a panel that includes former prize winners and the Spanish Royal Academy.

Previous winners include Juan Goytisolo and Nicanor Parra, and the prize is open to all authors from Spanish-speaking nations.
