Shantay, g’day! RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under is CONFIRMED – as the Stan Original series begins filming this week

RuPaul’s Drag Race is officially coming to Australia and New Zealand as part of an eight-part Stan Original series.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under will go into production this week, with superstar RuPaul serving as host alongside Drag Race icon Michelle Visage. 

‘I cannot wait for everyone to see that Down Under queens have some of the biggest charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talents in the world,’ said RuPaul.

‘Thank you to Stan and TVNZ for providing a platform for these outrageous drag artists to share their heart, soul and humour.’ 

Meanwhile, Stan’s Chief Content Officer Nick Forward said due to the series being a massive hit with viewers in Australia – it was time for a local version. 

‘You asked for it Australia, and now we’re bringing it to you – finally, our very own Aussie Drag Race, the new Stan Original Series RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under! 

‘The series is already a huge hit with our audience, so to now be working with RuPaul and the entire team at World of Wonder to create a local version is beyond a thrill.’

In a format similar to the US version, the Stan Original series will see both Australian and New Zealand drag queens compete for the privilege of being crowned the best queen Down Under.

Along the way they’ll be judged by a glittering array of celebrity guest judges, who will throw shade and provide feedback to the queens. 

Stan told Daily Mail Australia it will announce the participating queens, and the third celebrity judge who will appear on the series, at a later date.

Speculation has been rife as to who would appear on the series after whispers of its production were revealed by Daily Mail Australia earlier this month.   

Rumoured cast members include Sydney’s Vanity Faire, Felicia Foxx and Coco Jumbo, as well as Brisbane’s Scarlett Fever and Sellma Soul.

Newcastle’s Jojo Zaho and Melbourne’s Karen from Finance, Sabrina and Art Simone are also tipped to appear.

RuPaul’s Drag Race is already a huge success in the US, having received a record-breaking 34 Emmy nominations.

It has a total of nine wins, including Outstanding Reality-Competition Program and Outstanding Host for a Reality-Competition Program.

The format involves drag queens competing for a $100,000 prize by taking part in various challenges each week.

The British and American versions of RuPaul’s Drag Race are available to stream on Stan in Australia.
