Sacha Baron Cohen hails Donald Trump’s Twitter ban and Facebook suspension as ‘the most important moment in the history of social media’

Sacha Baron Cohen took to Twitter on Friday to applaud U.S. President Donald Trump’s ejection from social media.

‘The world’s largest platforms have banned the world’s biggest purveyor of lies, conspiracies and hate,’ the 49-year-old added.

‘To every Facebook and Twitter employee, user and advocate who fought for this–the entire world thanks you!’ Cohen continued.

After Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol this Wednesday with his encouragement the social media giants decided to ban him from their platforms.

Facebook suspended his accounts at least until the end of his presidency and he has been permanently banned from Twitter.

Earlier on Friday, before Twitter banned him, Cohen had posted an impassioned tweet urging the company to do so.

‘5 people are dead because of Trump’s election lies–lies you helped spread! How many more have to die before you ban Trump from Twitter?! Today, civil rights groups are calling on you to do the right thing!’ he insisted.

On Wednesday when Facebook suspended Trump Cohen exulted: ‘FINALLY–Facebook suspends Trump “indefinitely”! The dam is breaking.’

He gushed: ‘Every social media company, every online platform, every advertiser has a choice: Stand with Trump and the domestic terrorists who attacked the Capitol Or stand for democracy. #BanTrumpSaveDemocracy’.

Cohen famously gave a speech at an Anti-Defamation League event in late 2019 arguing for more restrictions on statements permitted on social media.

‘All this hate and violence is being facilitated by a handful of internet companies that amount to the greatest propaganda machine in history,’ he said.

Late last year he released a Borat sequel that went viral for an embarrassing moment involving Trump surrogate Rudy Giuliani.

‘Borat’s’ ‘daughter Tutar’ played by Maria Bakalova was interviewing Giuliani for a segment – one that he assumed was a real interview – in a hotel.

During that sequence he can be seen lying back on a bed and putting his hand down his pants as ‘Tutar’ adjusted his mic – he says, because he was just fixing his shirt.

‘The Borat video is a complete fabrication. I was tucking in my shirt after taking off the recording equipment,’ Giuliani snapped on Twitter.

In a recent Variety interview Cohen shared that he was hoping his movie would persuade people to vote against Trump in the 2020 election.

‘I don’t want to egotistically imply that people would watch Borat and not vote for Trump, but that was the aim,’ he dished.
