Sam Burgess’ children Poppy and Billy eschew rugby league as they learn to play polo

Their father might be a retired NRL great, but it seems that Sam and Phoebe Burgess’ children are developing a penchant for another sport – polo.

On Monday, former WAG Phoebe shared a sweet series of pictures of their children Poppy, four, and Billy, two, out on a field in Scone, on the NSW north coast, as they learned how to play the game.

‘The babes do polo… nothing like fresh country air, wide expanses of space and big sticks for entertaining the kids,’ Phoebe captioned the photos.

Moving up in the world! Sam Burgess’ children Poppy and Billy rugby learnt how to play polo with their mother Phoebe over the weekend

Phoebe and her children were visiting her friends in the area, who have just welcomed a baby.

The kids were playing with some of the mallets on the field.

Phoebe also shared a series of photos of herself in Scone as a game of polo played in the background.

Last month, Phoebe lifted the lid on the harrowing aftermath of her split from her NRL star husband Sam Burgess, 32.

The Burgesses separated in October 2019, after previously splitting in December 2018 just weeks after the birth of their son, Billy, and reconciling four months later.

Speaking to Stellar Magazine, Phoebe admitted that there are days she wants to ‘break down’, but the support of her family – and motherhood – have been her saving grace.

‘Motherhood is something I took for granted for so long. I mean, some days it was a real inconvenience,’ she told the magazine.

‘But in the past 18 months, it’s literally been everything. It’s why I’m here. It’s why I haven’t checked out.

‘I have days when I want to give up and fall apart and I just want to break; I want to go to sleep and not wake up for a while, for everything to stop, but you can’t.’

She added: ‘It sounds awful but being trapped in motherhood and being trapped in responsibility has saved my life. [My children] are my purpose, and when you have that purpose nothing can drag you away from them.’

Phoebe, who shares daughter Poppy, four, and son, Billy, two, with Sam, said she was still ‘in a daze’ after her marriage breakdown, and that she’d experienced, ‘a lot of pain, a lot of trauma, a lot of ugly stuff’.

However she has relied on her family – parents Sarah and Mitch Hooke – as well as her sisters, Harriet and Jemima, building an ‘idyllic’ and ‘beautiful little life’ at their picturesque rural estate in Bowral.
