Currently, Los Angeles County is offering the coronavirus vaccine to people over 65, who are at greater risk of serious complications or death if they contract the virus, as well as the staff and residents of long-term care facilities and healthcare workers.

The rollout across California has been going slowly, as counties have quickly run out of their shipments.

California Governor Gavin Newsom shook up the vaccine distribution on Monday when he announced that the state would now be using an age-based system to determine who can get the vaccine.

Although details weren’t announced, the state may now open up vaccinations to people over 50, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The original tier two plans were to give priority to people in prison and unhoused individuals, as well as people working in transportation and manufacturing, who are at greater risk of contracting the coronavirus, but those people may not have to wait if they’re too young.

manufacturing, transportation and commercial and residential settings along with incarcerated people and homeless people would be prioritized.

Although vaccine allotments are expected to go up 16 percent in the next three weeks, according to Cal Matters, people with health conditions that make the vulnerable to the virus may have to wait months before getting vaccinated.
