A student halls building in east London has been evacuated after a ‘suspicious item’ was found inside.

Met Police have placed a wide cordon around the block of flats near the Westfield shopping centre in Stratford with several emergency vehicles at the scene.

Stratford One, which is run by the accommodation provider Unite Students, was evacuated shortly before 3pm.

A witness at the scene who was asked what had happened told MyLondon: ‘Not sure, ambulances, police, dogs and fire engines and whole buildings been evacuated next to Westfield Stratford.’

Around four ambulances, two fire engines and multiple police vehicles were inside the cordon on Westfield Avenue.

In a statement Met Police said: ‘Police are in attendance in International Way, Newham after a suspicious item was found in a residential building at around 14:36hrs.

‘Specialist officers are working to examine the item. Residents have been evacuated as a precaution and road closures are in place.

‘Motorists are advised to avoid the area while emergency services manage the incident.’
