Sylvia Jeffreys praises Meghan Markle for her ‘raw and powerful’ miscarriage story

Today Extra host Sylvia Jeffreys has praised Meghan Markle for the moving piece she penned for The New York Times in which she revealed she suffered a devastating miscarriage earlier this year. 

Sylvia, 34, shared a link to the article on her Instagram story on Wednesday and said that it’s both ‘raw and powerful.’

It comes after Sylvia broke down in tears on Today Extra last month, when she revealed for the first time that she underwent IVF to have her son Oscar and revealed her struggles with fertility. 

‘This is a raw and powerful NY Times piece penned by Meghan Markle about the pregnancy loss she experienced earlier this year,’ Sylvia wrote online, before linking to the article. 

In the piece, the Duchess of Sussex said she lost her second child after feeling a ‘sharp cramp’ while changing her son Archie’s nappy in July.

Meghan revealed she fell ill at home in Los Angeles, before going to hospital, describing herself tearfully watching her husband Prince Harry’s ‘heart break as he tried to hold the shattered pieces of mine’ while grieving for their unborn baby. 

‘After changing his [Archie’s] diaper, I felt a sharp cramp. I dropped to the floor with him in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm, the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right’.

In the piece called ‘The Losses We Share’, she said: ‘I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second’.

‘Hours later, I lay in a hospital bed, holding my husband’s hand. I felt the clamminess of his palm and kissed his knuckles, wet from both our tears. Staring at the cold white walls, my eyes glazed over. I tried to imagine how we’d heal’. 

She added: ‘Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few’.

It is not known how pregnant Meghan was, but most women suffer miscarriages in the first 12 weeks. 

In October, Sylvia broke down in tears on Today Extra when she revealed that she underwent IVF to have her son Oscar, 11 months.

Sylvia was speaking to mother Brooke Campbell about IVF treatment and the ‘daunting and overwhelming’ decision of what to do with leftover frozen embryos once a family no longer wants to use them.

As Brooke discussed the options available, a clearly-emotional Sylvia said: ‘Brooke, I know from my personal experience with IVF that so much goes into having a successful embryo.’

As she fought through tears, she continued: ‘…and having something sitting there that gives you the opportunity to make life for your family. How are you and your husband coping?’

That same month, Sylvia announced that she and husband Peter Stefanovic are expecting their second child.

She revealed they will welcome another son next year. 

Sylvia and Peter first met when working for Channel Nine in 2014. 

They became engaged in France in 2016 tied the knot in the Kangaroo Valley in 2017.
