Taylor Swift teases more ‘cool surprises’ after announcing re-recorded versions of her old albums

Taylor Swift revealed on Good Morning America Thursday that she will be releasing her re-recorded song Love Story at midnight on February 11, in addition to the extended version of her 2008 studio album Fearless on April 9.

And in a December interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the 31-year-old songstress spoke about the process of re-recording her first five albums while making Evermore, in addition to teasing even more surprises to come. 

‘I want to keep a lot of cool surprises for the fans until I’m ready to show them fully to everyone,’ she said.

Announcing that the new renditions of her early projects were on their way after teasing a special announcement for days, fans continue to gear up for more surprise drops. 

Fans were only able to decipher the Fearless release date when she strategically capitalized letters in her social media announcement on Thursday, spelling out ‘April 9.’ 

Scooter Braun had acquired the rights to her first six studio albums when his company Ithaca Holdings purchased her former label Big Machine for $300M in June, eventually selling the rights to her masters in November. 

As outlined in her initial contract Swift was able to start re-recording her albums under her new label Republic Records, but the long awaited opportunity came at a time when she was additionally trying to release new music. 

Swift told Lowe that doing both in tandem made her feel ‘really proud of sort of the scope of things, while speaking on the importance of having control over her work as an artist.

‘I was allowed to start re-recording my music in November. By then we had a great deal of Evermore done. I had shot a music video for Willow, but I was still writing and I was still recording. So there would be days where I’d be recording You Belong With Me, and then I’d be recording a song like Happiness (off Evermore).’ 

She said that all the songs she’s written over the years are equally as ‘valid’ to her, as she spoke about evolving from writing about ‘troubles in high school’ to the musings of her adult life that are reflected in her recent albums. 

‘I’ve really felt very grateful lately for people giving me the ability to grow up creatively. And I know there have been snags and there’ve been times where people have been like, “I don’t like her.”‘

‘For the most part, I feel a great amount of gratitude that I was able to make music from the time I was a teenager to the time that I’m 31,’ she said. 

She added that regaining control over her catalog allows her to keep in mind what gets fans excited when it comes to her art.

‘You’re the only one who knows the kind of secrets of the journey of making this music. So you’re actually the only one who has the ability to share it with the fans in the way that can make everyone the happiest and the most excited.’

On Thursday she piggybacked on the process of revisiting the old parts of her while ushering in the new when it came to juggling old and new material, as she tweeted: 

‘This process has been more fulfilling and emotional than I could’ve imagined and has made me even more determined to re-record all of my music. I hope you’ll like this first outing as much as I liked traveling back in time to recreate it.’

Some of the surprises Taylor has alluded to are additional tracks she has added to her various studio albums that did not make the cut the first time around. 

Releasing her eighth and ninth studio albums with surprise drops – only notifying fans a mere hours before – Swift has alluded to following that method moving forward, as she continues to take control back of her music.

Her use of strategic capitalization in her recent announcement continues to pave the way for more surprise reveals.
