Terrifying moment driver spots lorry travelling the wrong way down a dual carriageway towards him at 4am

Shocking dashcam footage captured a HGV being driven the wrong way down a dual carriageway in south Wales.

Bus driver Robert Williams, 44, from Caerphilly, was driving to work in Cardiff at 3.57am on July 22 when he spotted the vehicle driving towards him on the outside lane of the A470.

The HGV’s driver later told police he had ended up driving the wrong way for more  than two miles after another motorist forced him to take evasive action as he left the M4 motorway.

The HGV driver ended up driving more than two miles north, on the southbound carriageway of the A470 between Coryton and Taff’s Well.

Police said the driver stopped when he reached a lay-by and police helped him turn the vehicle round before allowing the driver to continue his journey. 

Mr Williams later shared his dashcam footage online and wrote: ‘A470 this morning HGV in lane two driving the wrong way.’

One user commented: ‘That driver should have his licence revoked, very dangerous indeed!’

Another wrote: ‘Bet it made you think if you had got it wrong though.’

A third said: ‘I’ve seen it before where they go down southward and on the slip road – crazy!’

Speaking today, Mr Williams said: ‘He must come from Cwmbran M4 and took the wrong side of the slip road onto A470.

‘It is possible to do it from the Cardiff end as it is a slip road and a one-way road.

‘He had no choice but to stop as there was a patrol car on the other side in the lay-by.’

A spokesman for South Wales Police said: ‘Shortly before 4am on July 22 a report was received of a heavy goods vehicle travelling north in the southbound carriageway of the A470 near Taff’s Well.

‘Officers attended and located the lorry in a lay-by from where the driver was using the emergency telephone.

‘It is reported that the driver had to take evasive action when joining the A470 from the M4 and ended up on the wrong side of the central reservation.

‘He stopped the vehicle at the earliest opportunity.

‘Officers assisted in enabling the driver to turn the lorry around.

‘No-one was injured, and the driver was able to continue his journey.’
