Tesla will start allowing other automakers to use its Supercharger network in 2022, according to a new report.
The Elon Musk-led company told Norwegian officials it will start the process in September 2022, according to Electrek.
It’s unclear at this point if Tesla will start with its Superchargers in Norway or if it will let other electric vehicles from manufacturers such as General Motors and Ford use the entire network, which now spans more 25,000 chargers at more than 2,700 stations.
The electric vehicle maker spoke with Vestland fylkeskommune, the governing body of Norway’s Vestland county, according to minutes of the meeting obtained by Electrek.

‘The condition for benefits is that infrastructure must be developed with a publicly available offer,’ the minutes read. ‘Tesla applied for benefits to expand 5 fast-charging stations. Tesla’s charging stations today are just available for Tesla cars.’
‘That type of infrastructure is then only open for use by one group and not for the general public otherwise. In the application, Tesla describes the relevant charging stations will nevertheless be publicly available from the third quarter of 2022.
‘The administration considers that the charging stations for which benefits have been applied for will then be eligible for the scheme, provided that the benefits paid out after Tesla opens the charging offer for all car brands no later than the end of September 2022. The administration recommends that Vestland County Municipality take note that the benefit can be removed if the conditions are not met.’
Electrek added that an official in Germany has been speaking to Tesla about opening up its network for other automakers.
Palo Alto, California-based Tesla, which does not have a traditional press office, could not immediately be reached for comment via Musk’s Twitter page.
Tesla unveiled its Supercharger network in September 2012, several months after the release of its Model S sedan.
It started with six locations throughout California, but has grown to a worldwide operation since then.
Initially, Tesla offered free supercharging for both its Model S and Model X vehicle, but Musk said several years ago the perk was not ‘really sustainable’ as production of the vehicles ramped up.
It brought back free supercharging for the Model 3 during a period in 2018, but has more recently ended the perk.
Pricing varies by location and it may change from time to time, Tesla has said previously.
Earlier this month, Tesla filed a trademark application for ‘restaurant services,’ an idea first brought up by Musk several years ago.
It’s possible the restaurants could be located at or near the company’s Supercharger stations.

Once plugged in, the vehicle’s charge port will flash green to indicate that charging has started.
Drivers can monitor charging progress on your instrument panel or Tesla App.
The chargers allow Tesla owners to recharge their cars to 80 per cent within half an hour.
The firm currently has more than 2,700 Supercharger Stations with 25,000 Superchargers across the globe.
It plans to increase that to 3,000 by the end of this year.
