The most popular takeaway in your city revealed

Deliveroo has revealed it’s most popular dishes across the UK, with Londoners opting for a cheeseburger from Five Guys while those in Birmingham prefer a margherita pizza from Neapolitan chain Rudy’s.  

As we prepare to emerge from a long year of lockdowns, which saw Brits experiment with different cuisines, on-demand at-home deliveries, and TikTok food crazes, Deliveroo has revealed the most ordered dishes over the last three months in to reveal what the people of Britain have been tucking into and ordering at the touch of a button.

Sophisticated palates in Nottingham and Cambridge ordered poke bowls more than any other dish, while the most popular delivered meal in Scunthorpe was sausage rolls from Aldi.

Elsewhere, those in Norwich, Aberdeen and Oxford ordered burritos more than anything else, while those in Leicester, Portsmouth and Coventry all ordered desserts more than anything else.

Bristolians have been keeping it green, with falafel from Eat a Pitta being the top delivery choice. People of Lincoln have also opted for more vegan dishes this lockdown, with Bang Bang Cauliflower securing the top spot in the city. 

What were British people ordering in lockdown?  

Compared to 2020, Deliveroo saw a 111% increase in fresh flower orders on Mother’s Day in 2021, with London ordering the most, followed by Cambridge and Welwyn Garden City.    

Data revealed that Brits left it to the last minute to grab their Easter Eggs as Deliveroo saw a 450% YOY increase in Easter Egg orders.

In January, Deliveroo reported a huge increase in demand for vegan food, with orders of plant-based dishes up 163% on the previous year. The first week of January 2021 saw a 153% rise in searches for ‘vegan’ food in the app compared to the month before, as Brits in lockdown took on Veganuary.

In contrast, whilst Liverpudlians ordered more vegan foods in the first lockdown, this time around, Steak Poutine was top takeaway of choice. 

 Deliveroo data showed people of Bath and Edinburgh continue to be big fans of Thai food, with their top takeaway choice being a Pad Thai. 

In Newcastle and Guildford, customers were dreaming of the Mediterranean with locals ordering more Greek food than any other cuisine.

Customers in Middlesbrough branched out in lockdown 3.0, as they transitioned from ordering cheeseburgers in the first lockdown to Lobster Spaghetti this time around.

Deliveroo also revealed they saw a  188 per cent increase in Mochi orders between January and March, since the Japanese dessert took the internet by storm, while orders from Chinese restaurants also increased by 176 per cent. 

It comes as takeaway delivery app, Foodhub has revealed that Birmingham ordered more lockdown takeaways than anywhere else in the UK – taking the title of the UK’s takeaway capital.

The nationwide study reveals almost one in 10 people in the city ordered takeaway food every single day during lockdown, while over half ordered a takeaway 2-5 times a week during the lockdown period.

Nationally, the most popular takeaway ordered during lockdown was Chinese food with pizza coming in second place, followed by the classic English dish – fish & chips.

Wil Chung, Foodhub spokesperson, told FEMAIL: ‘Lockdown saw a big rise in takeaway orders and fast-food deliveries, due to restaurant and pub closures.

‘In fact, as a nation, we ordered so much takeaway food during the last year that many of us (42%) are now on first name terms with our delivery drivers.

‘When it comes to ordering a food feast, customers clearly like to stick to their favourite takeaway treats – almost three quarters of people (69%) said they haven’t tried new takeaway cuisines during lockdown and just stayed with ordering what they know and love.’

It comes as takeaway delivery giant Just Eat has revealed that Britons stuck in lockdown ordered a total of 64 million meals through the firm in the first three months of 2021.

The company said order numbers soared across all its markets by 79 per cent over the past three months as lockdown measures sparked demand from housebound customers.

The Just Eat Takeaway.com group told investors on Tuesday morning that it processed around 200 million orders globally in the first quarter of 2021.

The company – created through the £6.2 billion merger between Just Eat and Dutch rival Takeaway last year – said growth was particularly strong in the UK market.

Just Eat UK processed 64 million orders in the quarter, up 96 per cent compared with the same period of 2020.

It said it was boosted by signing deals with chains such as Leon, Tortilla and Chipotle, as well as coffee brands Starbucks and Costa, to add to its portfolio of restaurants.

 Looking at data from across the country for the last ten years, accounting for more than a million orders, Just Eat revealed pizza has been the most ordered dish every year since 2017, with it soaring in 2020 to accounted for a whopping 19 per cent of all Just Eat’s orders.

Missing out on the top spot was Chinese takeaway, which topped the polls from 2011 to 2016.

Dishes from Chinese restaurants were also the most popular last year in southern England, with it taking the top spot in London, the south east and the south west, while Indian food was the most ordered cuisine in Scotland, and the third most ordered nationwide. 

Meanwhile, orders for vegan food has increased a whopping 119 per cent year on year, with it surging in popularity more than 2900 per cent since 2015.
