A working mum has shared her time-saving meal prep trick for busy weeks at work, and it will only take you 15 minutes in the kitchen.

The Australian woman, called Kirsty, said on a Sunday afternoon, she spends around 15 minutes in the kitchen chopping up vegetables.

She then puts all of the food into a zip-lock bag, labels each bag and puts the bags into the freezer.

‘Meal prep Sunday,’ Kirsty posted.

’15 minutes in the kitchen chopping up veggies. Into zip-lock bags and into the freezer.

‘Quick defrost and into the frying pan. Convenient for those weekday meals!’

The meals she had created in advance include chicken laksa, stir fry, the vegetables for spaghetti carbonara, chow mein and spaghetti.

Thousands who saw the simple trick said it was worth trying and something they would definitely try to combat wastage.

‘You are my spirit animal – thank you for sharing,’ one woman posted.

‘Wow, this is an awesome idea! Especially when it gets to the end of the week and you have to rush to use the veggies before they start going bad!’ another added.

Some were confused as to how vegetables that don’t typically last well such as mushrooms typically age when they are cut up and frozen.

‘They can be a little soggy but I don’t mind my veggies soft. I can’t eat them crunchy,’ Kirsty posted.

Kirsty also said she doesn’t typically blanche or steam her vegetables before she puts them in the freezer.

This isn’t the first meal prep tip that has taken the internet by storm.

Last year, an anonymous woman posted on Reddit, where she said she and her friends all meal prep one dish on Sundays and then they get together and exchange dinners.

‘Meal prep swap – how to avoid eating the same thing six days in a row,’ the woman wrote.

She accompanied her post with a picture of the six pre-made meals.

They included a bean salad, rice and vegetables, curry and vegetable bolognese.

What are Katie Lolas’ budget meal prep secrets and tricks?

* Have a plan and decide what to make before you cook.

* Choose recipes that don’t require too many ingredients or cooking techniques.

* Avoid all recipes that have more than 20 steps and require six ingredients you’ve never heard of.

* Start slow and only prep the meals you struggle with most. There is no need to prep every single meal for the week ahead of time.

* Fill up your pantry with staples and homebrand products.

* Keep an eye on supermarket specials and catalogue deals and theme your meal preps around these.

* Bulk out meals with extra vegetables and rice.

* Prep snacks to stop you having to buy things on the go.

* If you don’t fancy cooking, whip up a no-cook meal prep.
